While details remain very slim regarding Sony's standalone Venom film, Michelle Williams has finally confirmed her role. Williams is playing Anne Weying, who Marvel Comics readers may recognize as She-Venom.
Speaking with Screen Rant as part of her promotion for Ridley Scott’s All The Money In The World, Williams confirmed reports that she is indeed playing the character. Sony has yet to officially reveal her role in the film.
Asked specifically about playing Anne Weying in Venom, Williams was understandably tightlipped. "She’s, geez, what can I tell you?" she replied. "Not too much right now." An answer light on details, but one that does at least confirm her character's name in the film.
In Marvel's comic book continuity, Weying is the ex-wife of Eddie Brock, played in the Venom film by star Tom Hardy. She eventually transformed into She-Venom, otherwise known as The Bride of Venom, though it's not entirely obvious whether the Venom film will indeed go down this route just yet.
The movie will adapt the Lethal Protector storyline from the comics, which sees the symbiote-powered titular character explore San Francisco. The miniseries introduced the Life Foundation as the main antagonists, an organization who had its own nefarious plans for the alien symbiote, creating five of their own horrific spawns. In the comics, the Life Foundation consisted of Scream, Phase, Riot, Lasher and Agony, though there is a chance that better known characters such as Carnage and She-Venom could be incorporated into the live-action adaptation.
Venom hits theaters October 5, 2018.
