Michael Uslan named NY Comic Con Guest of Honor

Official Press Release

New York Comic Con (NYCC) today revealed another Guest of Honor who will participate in its 2009 event -- Michael Uslan, an Executive Producer of this past summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight and a Producer of this Christmas’s highly anticipated Frank Miller film, The Spirit, based on the acclaimed work by Will Eisner. New York Comic Con takes place February 6 - 8, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York, NY, and Michael Uslan will appear to host panels and screenings and participate in autograph sessions throughout the weekend.

As a boy, Uslan lined up anxiously for the first New York City comic book convention which took place in 1964 at The Broadway Central, a small hotel on the Bowery. Later, he wrote for early fanzines and hung out at all the New York based comic book companies as well as The Comics Code Authority, where he quickly gained a first-hand understanding of all aspects of the comic book business. Uslan then created and taught the world's first college-accredited course on comic books. He would go on to write, direct, and produce books, cartoons, documentaries, TV movies and mini-series, and feature films.

Uslan has served as Executive Producer of every Batman feature film since 1989's Batman -- films including The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Batman: Gotham Knight, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. He is currently producing the upcoming films: The Spirit with Deborah DelPrete and GiGi Pritzker, Exec Producers Benjamin Melniker and Steven Maier, and Co-Producers FJ DeSanto and Linda McDonough; Billy Batson and the Secret of Shazam with Pete Segal and Michael Ewing,; The Shadow with Sam Raimi and Josh Donen; and Doc Savage. Uslan’s comic book and comic strip writing have included Batman, The Shadow, Terry & the Pirates, the graphic novel Batman: Detective #27, and beginning in early 2009, The Spirit (with FJ DeSanto).

"Starting in 1979, I set out to bring Batman to the silver screen as the dark, serious creature of the night as he was originally created," Uslan said. "That has become my life's journey, culminating with The Dark Knight, thanks to the genius and talents of Christopher Nolan and Producers Chuck Roven and Emma Thomas."

Uslan won his Emmy Award for bringing to television the classic television show, Where On Earth Is Carmen SanDiego?

“Michael Uslan has turned a love of comics into a brilliant career and he is responsible for creating countless new fans,” New York Comic Con Show Manager Lance Fensterman said. “He is the perfect Guest of Honor for our show. We are honored to host him and we are delighted to give him and his fans a chance to interact.”
