Michael Fassbender Rides Into Action in New Assassin's Creed Image

Michael Fassbender rides in as swordsman Aguilar in a new behind-the-scenes photo from "Assassin's Creed" that debuted in Total Film magazine.

The image features Fassbender in 15th-century attire riding horseback during an action scene, but no context is provided.

Inspired by the hit Ubisoft video-game franchise, Fox's upcoming action-adventure stars the "X-Men" actor as Callum Lynch, who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks genetic memories, is able to experience the life of his ancestor Aguilar in 15th-century Spain. He discovers he’s descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

The film moves between the present day and the 15th century as Lynch trains to relive the life of Aguilar. According to Total Film, the sequences set in the past will be entirely in Spanish, with English subtitles. “I just love the fact [production company] New Regency embraced it,” director Justin Kurzel told the magazine. “We did play around with English as well, but it was really obvious what you wanted as soon as you went back and started speaking beautiful Spanish. It really adds an exoticness and richness to the film.”

Also starring Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson, "Assassin's Creed" arrives in theaters Dec. 21.
