Transformers director Michael Bay has called The Last Knight his final film in the franchise, but star Mark Wahlberg isn't buying it. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Wahlberg said he'd be surprised if Bay did actually "walk away" from directing Transformers films after the series' fifth installment.

"Right now, he says he doesn't want to do another film and he says that after every film because they are so difficult to make and he pretty much has to do it single-handedly, even with all the help that he has because all of the movie is in his mind," Wahlberg explained.

"So he'll decide that and I would be hard pressed to see him walk away and put it in somebody else's control and care," he added. "I mean, that's just the Michael that I know, but you never know, sometimes people decide to move on, so we'll see what happens."

“These movies that I’ve done, they are massive movies. They take a lot out of you,” Bay said in an interview earlier this month, indicating that The Last Knight would be his final installment in the Transformers franchise. “I’ve done it enough, and I’ve had a great time doing it. I’m going out with a bang on this one, and I feel like you gotta go out while you’re ahead, you know. I think I’ve had a good run, and I’ve got a lot of other movies I want to do.”

Bay has directed five Transformers films to date. Though he will step down as director from the main Transformers films, he plans to remain involved in the franchise, perhaps as part of a spinoff. In April, he said “there’s some good stuff” in the the spinoff series planned so far and added, “I would like to do one of them, though.” In the same interview, Bay revealed that there is enough material for fourteen other stories in the Transformers franchise.

Bay rebooted the “Transformers” series with the aptly titled action film “Transformers” in 2007, which put actors like Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox on the map. Since then, the series has gone on to feature various leads, like Wahlberg and Isabela Moner, as well as a whole host of transforming robots adapted from the original Hasbro toy line and subsequent animated series, the first of which debuted in 1985.

In theaters now, Transformers: The Last Knight stars franchise veterans Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro, joined by newcomers Isabela Moner, Liam Garrigan, Jerrod Carmichael, Mitch Pileggi, Laura Haddock, Santago Cabrera and Anthony Hopkins.
