Being a young hero in the world of My Hero Academia isn't easy. It’s particularly difficult for the students of Class 1-A, who are constantly attacked by villains. Despite being in their first year at U.A., they end up having to participate in the Paranormal Liberation War.

Fortunately, they are up to the challenge and hold their own against the terrifying villains. But not all men are created equal, and the same thing goes for Quirks. Some of students in Class 1-A have uniquely powerful abilities, but others are rather boring. Some students are just stuck with underwhelming Quirks.

10 UNIQUE: Izuku Midoriya’s One For All Gives Him A Huge Arsenal Of Abilities

Deku Fight

The protagonist of the story, Izuku Midoriya has one of the strangest Quirks of all. At first, One for All seems plain. As with the iconic hero All Might, it manifests as a simple and overwhelming strength enhancement. Despite originally struggling with the Quirk, Izuku is able to take things much further than his mentor.

Through One for All, he gains access to all the Quirks of the previous users. Notable abilities include Float, Blackwhip, and Danger Sense. Izuku’s huge arsenal turns him into a powerhouse and the only one who can hold his own against the power of the unleashed Tomura Shigaraki.

9 BORING: Rikido Sato’s Sugar Rush Is A Simple Strength Enhancement

Sato's Sugar Rush

All Might’s strength enhancement may have seemed simple, but its sheer power made him stand out, as he was even able to change the weather with a single punch. The same thing cannot be said about Rikido Sato’s Sugar Rush.

Rikido’s Quirk enhances his strength as he consumes sugar, with every ten grams of sugar he ingests, he adds three minutes to his physical enhancement. Unfortunately, this doesn’t come without a cost, as using the Quirk decreases his intelligence. Rikido's abilities are nothing to boast about, and his flurries of punches pale in comparison to the talents of his classmates.

8 UNIQUE: The Dual Nature Of Shoto Todoroki’s Half-Cold Half-Hot Elevates It

Shoto Icy Hot My Hero Academia

Elemental superpowers are a staple of every comic book, with pyrokinesis and cryokinesis both fairly popular. But bringing the two opposite abilities together is unusual, and that’s exactly what Shoto Todoroki’s Half-Cold, Half-Hot does. Shoto starts out as a powerhouse in wielding his ice, but as the anime progresses, he begins to overcome his misgivings with his fire-side with the help of his friends.

The dual nature of Shoto’s Quirk elevates it over regular elemental abilities, allowing Shoto to use complicated attacks that require the mastery of both ice and fire. One can only hope the young hero will eventually come up with a Hero name that’s as interesting as his Quirk is.

7 BORING: Hanta Sero Just Can’t Get Rid Of The Plainness Of His Tape

Hanta Sero striking a pose

One of the most memorable moments in My Hero Academia displays Shoto Todoroki going against Hanta Sero in the U.A Sports Festival — and losing badly. At the time, Present Mic comments on Hanta’s unfortunate ‘plainness.’ Mic’s comment may have been unkind but he’s not exactly wrong. Hanta’s Quirk Tape allows him to shoot tape from his elbows. It’s an ability that is excellent for traps and mobility but it’s not exactly the most exciting thing in the world.

6 UNIQUE: Mezo Shoji’s Dupli-Arms Comes With Many Advantages

mezo shoji

In the hero society of MHA, it’s not unusual for mutant Quirks to be discriminated against, particularly when a mutation is intimidating. Mezo Shoji is one such case, though his power comes with many advantages. Dupli-Arms grants the user an extra set of tentacle-like arms which he can transform into other body parts. It’s an exceptional Quirk, particularly since the new body parts are more efficient than regular ones.

The ears Mezo can manifest through his Quirk grant him enhanced hearing, making him particularly well-suited for scouting. He is also able to provide shelter for his allies, as evidenced by the Cavalry Battle in the U.A. Sports Tournament. In terms of pure physical strength, he ranks highly among the students in Class 1-A. A versatile and unique presence, Tentacole will undoubtedly become a great hero — just as long as he can embrace his full potential and isn’t brought down by people who unjustly criticize his looks.

5 BORING: Mashirao Ojiro’s Tail Does Nothing But Grant Its User An Extra Appendage

Mashirao Ojiro’s Quirk, Tail, is perhaps the most straightforward ability in Class 1-A. It grants him a tail that he can use as a third limb. He has learned to incorporate this appendage into his martial arts training, making him an efficient hand-to-hand fighter. But that doesn’t mean his Quirk is any less boring, or that he can ever stand out in any way.

4 UNIQUE: Fumikage Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow Is An Amazingly Sentient Quirk

One of the most unusual Quirks in the show, Fumikage Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow is an ability with such potential it draws the eye of Pro Hero Hawks. Its mere nature makes it special, as Dark Shadow is a sentient Quirk, practically having a mind of its own. The Quirk gets more powerful the darker it is, but it also becomes harder to control. In such cases, Fumikage has even been overwhelmed by it, particularly in moments of great emotion, such as the Vanguard Action Squad’s attack on the hero training camp.

The Quirk’s main weakness — beyond its occasional tendency to go on a rampage — is light. However, Fumikage is advancing in leaps and strides and addressing these issues. He is discovering new ways to protect Dark Shadow from light and, with Hawks’s help, has even managed to come up with the Super Move Black Fallen Angel, which allows him to fly. Dark Shadow a truly amazing Quirk, and fans look forward to seeing more from Tsukuyomi.

3 BORING: Denki Kaminari’s Electrification Is Powerful, But Not That Interesting

kaminari denki lightning effect

Not every powerful Quirk is necessarily interesting. The perfect example is Denki Kaminari’s Electrification. The Quirk allows its user to emit electricity, a power that can be highly volatile and shock his own allies if he’s not careful. If he pushes himself too far, Denki will also short-circuit his brain and render himself ‘stupid’ for an hour.

Despite the drawbacks, it’s a strong Quirk and definitely flashy enough to draw the attention of Pro Heroes. Even so, it’s fairly straightforward and there’s nothing innovative about it. To his credit, Denki does discover new ways to use it, but there are far more exciting Quirks in Class 1-A.

2 UNIQUE: Momo Yaoyorozu’s Creation Stands Out As One Of The Most Unusual Quirks

momo thinking from my hero

The concept of being able to create anything may be God-like, but Momo Yaoyorozu brings it firmly into reality. Class 1-A vice president is able to create any non-living thing from her lipids as long as she knows its atomic structure.

It’s always exciting to see Momo fight, as viewers never know what kind of strategy she has prepared or what she will create next. While Momo isn’t the strongest student, Creation is easily one of the most interesting Quirks in the series.

1 BORING: Toru Hagakure’s Invisibility Just Make Its User Invisible

My Hero Academia Toru Hagakure in a cheerleader outfit

It’s a good thing that Toru Hagakure has a chipper and friendly personality. Otherwise, she would go completely unnoticed. Her Quirk Invisibility appears to involve some kind of light manipulation and makes her body completely invisible.

While Toru has been able to use it through some unexpected and creative Super Moves, she can’t quite compare to other Class 1-A students, with far more remarkable abilities. It’s just as well that she is dedicated to stealth, because she definitely wouldn’t be able to shine otherwise.
