Metropolis, Illinois has shown its support for frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Workers in the city have applied a mask to the giant Superman statue that stands in front of the county courthouse.Local Metropolis resident Deneal Welch Bullock crafted the mask that now adorns the statue's face. The mask is meant to honor the essential workers who are keeping the city running during this pandemic. The local Superman Museum reported on it, showcasing some photos of the Man of Steel with his new mask.
The Superman Museum is home to the "World's Largest Collection of Superman", boasting over 70,000 items and pieces of memorabilia. Among the pieces in the collection are several props from the various Superman films and television shows over the years.
Metropolis has earned the nickname of "Superman's Hometown" over the years, due to the fact that the Man of Steel calls the fictional city of Metropolis his home in the DC Universe. They hold an annual holiday known as the Superman Celebration, in which, Superman fans from all over the world gather to celebrate the Last Son of Krypton. The 2020 celebration, which was supposed to take place on June 11-14, was canceled due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.
