Solid Snake might finally be hitting the big screen, as Kotaku reports a Metal Gear Solid film was officially announced Tuesday at Konami's Metal Gear anniversary event in Tokyo.

A series of banners revealed the film is in the works at Sony's Columbia Pictures division before it was confirmed that Avi Arad, former CEO of Marvel Studios and a producer of the Spider-Man movie franchise, is producing the video-game adaptation. Arad appeared on stage, saying, "For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters. Comic books are now biggest genre in cinema. Video games are the comic books of today." He added, "We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed."

Hollywood has yet to crack the code when it comes to video games, but Arad does have a good track record. He's also working on Mass Effect and Uncharted films, but as Kotaku points out, there's a small mountain in development hell composed of never-produced video game adaptations.
