In this feature I explore the context behind (using reader danjack's term) "meta-messages." A meta-message is where a comic book creator comments on/references the work of another comic book/comic book creator (or sometimes even themselves) in their comic. Today we look at Erik Larsen's response to the "Hulk with a fin on his head" issue of Incredible Hulk...

The other day, I featured Peter David making a joke about the Savage Dragon being, in effect, the Hulk with a fin on his head.

A year later, Erik Larsen addressed the point in Savage Dragon #64, a really fun issue spotlighting what Dragon is doing with his time now that he has retired from fighting crime due to the death of his wife (his wife left a daughter from a previous marriage behind and Dragon didn't feel right risking his life while raising her) and has recently begun dating an assistant director he met while doing a commercial (he had become a major celebrity by this time). While on a date with the director, Marcy, and his adopted daughter, Angel, they come across a statue that was erected in honor of Dragon...
