In a surprise move this weekend, Netflix suddenly dropped Mercy Black, a new horror movie acclaimed studio Blumhouse Productions. Written and directed by Owen Egerton, the film stars Danielle Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead), Elle LaMont (Alita: Battle Angel), and Janeane Garofalo."It’s the story of a woman 15 years after she stabbed a classmate,” Egerton said told Entertainment Weekly, before adding that it was followed the woman after she summons the film's titular demon.RELATED: Netflix Reportedly Renews The Umbrella Academy for Season 2“She committed this horrendous act to conjure a phantom called Mercy Black," Egerton continued, "She’s just now getting out of a mental asylum and presumably cured but she’s beginning to see all the things she never thought she’d see again. The creature becomes a viral success, even her young nephew is becoming obsessed with this Mercy Black, and she has to, perhaps for the first time ever, face what she’s done and the power of this mythical creature.”

Explaining his cinematic approach, Egerton said he made the movie to scare himself more with concepts and subtle moments that are "uncomfortable" than the usual shocks.

"It’s filled with scares and surprises and all the stuff I love in horror movies, but some of the most terrifying moments are when two people are talking and a truth comes out that’s just too hard to take,” he said.

Egerton, a comedian and a performer with the Alamo Drafthouse troupe Master Pancake, follows in the footsteps of fellow comic-turned-horror maven Jordan Peele by making genre thrillers with Blumhouse, the production company known for Get Out, the Happy Death Day movies, and the Purge series. He is also known for the horror films Follow and Blood Fest.

Between Stranger Things, The Haunting of Hell House, and others such as Bird Box, The Ritual, Hush, and Velvet Buzzsaw, this marks the latest in Netflix's impressive line-up of ghoulish or gothic offerings.

Directed and written by Owen Egerton, Mercy Black stars Danielle Pineda, Austin Amelio, Elle LaMont, Miles Emmons, Dylan Gage, Lee Eddy, Rochelle Robinson and Janeane Garofalo
