With the premiere of "Star Trek: Beyond" quickly approaching, the Paramount Pictures marketing machine kicks it into full swing with this featurette spotlighting the film's villainous Krall.
Played by Idris Elba, Krall could be the Federation’s deadliest foe to date. Although he possesses all of the prerequisite elements of villainy, Elba warns you might actually feel some empathy toward Krall: "We want to understand why he’s got such a beef with the Federation."
Director Justin Lin echoes that sentiment, saying, "I wanted a character that’s there to deconstruct the Federation’s ideals, but to do it in a way where he has a very valid philosophy."
The featurette is heavy on action and behind-the-scenes looks of Krall, as well as the crew of the ill-fated Enterprise. Yes, it looks like were losing the ship again. "Watching the Enterprise crash and burn felt like I was destroying a legacy," Elba reflects. "Krall is certainly going to be remembered for that."
Opening July 22, "Star Trek Beyond" also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Sofia Boutella.
