The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given audiences worldwide a variety of well-established characters, fleshed out throughout a multitude of blockbuster films. Superheroes such as Iron Man, Captain America and Thor all got trilogy films. According to Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore, those trilogies weren't planned.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Moore explained, "Even in Phase 1, I would argue did not think 'Oh, we're definitely going to do three films and then be done,' So again, as Kevin would say, 'let's put all the great ideas in this film and then see if people like it.' So we don't necessarily have a trilogy planned out, it's not something that is a must have. Obviously, we hope people love the movie and obviously we have ideas just as fans where we could go, but there isn't a hard and fast rule of like we got to have three of these things and this is the first."

The undeniable success of 2008's Iron Man, as well as its connection to The Incredible Hulk, ensured that the film received a sequel, even before the first Avengers film. Though Captain America and Thor also saw sequels, they took place after the events of the Phase 1 ensemble film. While no other threequels have yet been released, there is a clear trend.

Both Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man -- new properties introduced in Phase 2 -- received sequels later on. Both of those franchises have third instalments in the words. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in development with director James Gunn returning, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is on its way. It's worth noting that Phase 4, which those films will be a part of, will also feature Thor: Love and Thunder, a fourth entry in the Thor film series.

Before any of those films are released, MCU fans can look forward to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third film in the Spider-Man film series and one that star Tom Holland suggests will be the final solo Spider-Man film. He stated in a recent interview, "We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise... I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you'd be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don't know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it."

Spider-Man: No Way Home is rumored to see the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and the Amazing Spider-Man films, respectively. The film is set to arrive in theaters on Dec. 17.
