Although audiences first met him playing Captain Kirk's doomed dad in the 2009 reboot of Star Trek, Chris Hemsworth is better known for his portrayal of Thor, the God of Thunder. The first solo film for Thor made its debut in 2011 and was directed by Kenneth Branagh. The Marvel Cinematic Universe at that point was still young and untested, but audiences became enamored by Thor and would follow his adventures for two additional Thor sequels and three Avengers films. Asgard, the adversarial relationship between Thor and his brother as well as the challenging relationship between Thor and his father created for complex drama and entertaining cinema. If we could make one wish upon the broken remains of Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, it would be for the character to start making sense!

Let's face it, all the movies are going to have problems with the plot, flaws in the logic or contradictions to the continuity established in previous movies. However, it really does feel like the flaws that Thor has are Odin-sized and they keep getting worse. If you're a 1,500-year-old space-faring Viking, you're bound to make some mistakes from time to time. For example, did the events of Thor: Ragnarok negate the importance of Mjolnir established in the two previous films? Why did Thor travel the cosmos to find the Infinity Stones when he could have asked someone close to him that could have found them much quicker and easier? How Thor travels, his choice of weapons and even his title of God of Thunder gets some closer inspection, and after reading this article you may never look at Thor the same way again!

15 GOD OF THUNDER?

Marvel Comics feature characters such as Zeus and Mephisto, and although they may be referred to as gods, they're technically very powerful extradimensional entities. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Asgardians are actually aliens, but they still have the names of people from Norse mythology. So how did the space Viking known as Thor earn the title of God of Thunder?

Loki refers to himself in Avengers: Infinity War as the God of Mischief, but are these titles that were given to the sons of Odin by someone, or are these just cool nicknames that they call themselves? Was there a vote? According to Norse mythology, Thor was also associated with agriculture and fertility. Why wasn't that in the movies, eh?

14 IS THOR OLDER THAN THOR?

Thor Ragnarok

In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor revealed to Groot and Rocket that he's 1,500 years old! That would mean he was born around the beginning of the 6th century. Given this timeframe, we're not sure when he had the time to come to Earth (ahem, Midgard) and impress the Norse to the point that they would give Thor the title God of Thunder. There's also another big problem...

There have been items, such as coins, found in Germanic areas of the former Roman Empire that make references to such characters as Hercules and Thor. These coins date back to the 2nd and 3rd century, so how could the legend of Thor predate the man himself?

13 WHY DIDN'T THOR KNOW MORE ABOUT THE INFINITY STONES?

Before Thor went to take on Surtur and prevent the destruction of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor was looking for the Infinity Stones. Perhaps he got distracted by the incoming threat of Surtur, but why wasn't Thor more successful in finding out information about the Infinity Stones? We don't want to be the ones to doubt Thor, but what did he exactly do?

Is he kind of like the roommate that said he did the household chores but the floor still looks suspiciously un-mopped? Who did Thor talk to? Did Thor at least speak with Heimdall, who literally sees everything in the Nine Realms? Did he ask people across the galaxy by sending them an electronic letter?

12 DARK ELVES HAVE SPACESHIPS BUT ASGARDIANS RIDE HORSES?

There's a scene in Thor in which Odinson tells Jane Foster that to Asgardians, magic and science are one and the same thing. This is reminiscent of the writings of Arthur C. Clarke, who stated that advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. This makes sense, because someone from the 1800s would probably think that an iPhone was some magical device.

This might work when explaining the Bifrost. It appears to be generated by a giant golden machine but it also looks like it's using magic. Why does Asgard have the technology to travel dimensions, yet they all look like extras from Game of Thrones? With the exception of Mjolnir, it also looks like Thor uses neither science or magic!

11 WHY DIDN'T THOR ASK FOR HELP DURING THE DARK WORLD?

The complaint we have here applies to pretty much any MCU hero with their own solo movie. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America chastises Tony Stark for creating Ultron without consulting with anyone. Cap's comments that win or lose, they will do both as a team. So why is it when Marvel heroes get into trouble in their own movie, no one is shouting Avengers assemble?

In Iron Man 3, Tony does not call for help (or have his fellow Avengers look for him) after his home is taken out by helicopters firing rockets. Captain America doesn't call for the Avengers during the events of Winter Soldier. How come Thor didn't call for help while dealing with Malekith and the Aether during Thor: The Dark World?

10 MJOLNIR'S IMPORTANT IN THE FIRST MOVIE, BUT NOT THE THIRD?

After an emotional argument with his father, Thor was banished to Midgard by Odin. He made Thor unworthy to wield Mjolnir and put an enchantment on it that prevented him from regaining his weapon until he learned humility. His hammer was a symbolic as well as a literal device in the evolution of the character. Then Thor: Ragnarok came along and negated all of that.

In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is reminded by the spirit of Odin that he's the God of Thunder, not the God of Hammers. So if Thor figured this out in the first movie, did that mean he could have bypassed his inability to pick up Mjolnir and regained his powers on his own?

9 WHY DID THOR NEED STORMBREAKER TO TAKE ON THANOS?

Thor Holding Stormbreaker

In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor's hammer is destroyed by his sister, Hela. They have an intense battle and through a vision from Odin, Thor realizes that his true power lies from within. He becomes the true God of Thunder and is able to dispatch the majority of Hela's army with his new lightning powers.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor goes to Nidavellir to obtain a new weapon to defeat Thanos. Why didn't he create Stormbreaker before he went off to battle Hela? Thanos needed to collect the Infinity Stones to be all-powerful, but Hela from the beginning was a massive threat to Thor and to Asgard, so why is Thanos the one that needs the special weapon built just for him?

8 WHY DOES THOR THINK HE CAN FLY A SPACESHIP?

In the hilarious opening to Thor: Ragnarok, Thor tells a story about his exploits, exploring the cosmos and looking for Infinity Stones. How was he doing that exactly? Was he flying around space with Mjolnir the way he did in the comics? Was he using the Bifrost? This also revisits the question about the current technological level of Asgard: does Asgard have spaceships lying around for Thor to use?

Granted, we know from Infinity War that he learned to speak Groot, but when would he learn how to fly a space vessel? To paraphrase Captain Kirk, what does the God of Thunder need with a starship? When did he ever learn to fly an Avengers Quinjet? When would he ever need to learn how to fly one?

7 WHY WAS THOR SURPRISED BY THE EYEBALL ROCKET GAVE HIM?

Both Thor and Odin lost one eye while in battle, but in the comics, Odin sacrificed one of his eyes to gain knowledge. At the end of Thor: Ragnarok, we see Thor sporting an eyepatch similar to the one worn by his father, symbolizing his transformation into the true King of Asgard. However, in Infinity War, Thor gets an odd gift from Rocket Raccoon.

Rocket gives Thor a prosthetic eye he happened to have before they reach Nidavellir. When Thor puts the eye into his socket, he says it's not working because everything seems dark. He may have been referring to the fact that the forge went out on Nidavellir, but why did Thor think that putting a fake eye into his head would give him the ability to see?

6 WHY DID THOR HAVE SUCH A HARD TIME FIGHTING IRON MAN?

In the comics, Thor and Iron Man have fought not only together but against each other as well. To even stand a chance, Tony had to create a specialized suit of armor made out of Asgardian Uru metal and even then it's a struggle for Shellhead. Even without using his hammer, the God of Thunder shreds through the Iron Man suit like it was tissue paper. So why did MCU Thor have such a hard time fighting MCU Iron Man?

In the first Avengers movie, Iron Man fights Thor after Thor steals his brother from a Quinjet. If the fight wasn't broken up by Captain America, Thor probably would have won, but why couldn't Thor crack open Tony's Arc Reactor with the first throw of his hammer?

5 WHY DOES HELA LOOK LIKE LOKI?

Hela was an amazing villain in Thor: Ragnarok. Not only was she powerful enough to stop Thor, but she was also related to him as well. However, when you look at the giant headpiece she's wearing, her jet black hair and villainous demeanor, doesn't she physically remind you more of Loki than that of the fair-haired Thor?

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense given the fact that Loki is a brother to Thor only by adoption. So if that's the case, then why do Hela and Loki look like Goth twins, leaving Thor the odd man out? Perhaps this is an homage to the comics, because, in the pages of Thor, Hela is actually not the sister, but the daughter of Loki!

4 WHY DID THOR HAVE VISIONS OF THE INFINITY STONES?

The Scarlet Witch's powers were always unclear both in the comics as well as the movies. In the MCU, it appears that Wanda Maximoff is a telekinetic and also has the ability to do forms of mind control and manipulation. Wanda has the Avengers go through traumatic experiences in their minds in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but something else happens for Thor.

Captain America and Black Widow experience haunting moments from their past, but Thor has a vision in which Heimdall says the Son of Odin is going to bring destruction to them all. He also has a vision of the Infinity Stones and he is shown the creation of Vision. Why is that? Why does he also only envision four of the six stones?

3 HOW COULD ODIN REMOVE THOR'S POWERS?

Odin with Mjolnir in the first Thor film

In the scene where the different Avengers try to pick up Thor's hammer in Age of Ultron, Tony makes the remark that Mjolnir is merely encoded to Thor's fingerprints. This goes back to the argument that Asgardians blur the line between magic and science. So when Odin removed Thor's powers in the first Thor movie, did he do it with magic or with technology?

In the comics, the magic that Odin possesses is some of the strongest in the universe, but in the MCU does the magic that Odin possess similar to the magic used by Doctor Strange? If he's using magic, why doesn't he teach Thor these abilities as well since he's supposed to become the next King of Asgard?

2 WHY IS THOR SO UNAWARE OF THE WORLD AROUND HIM?

When Thor sits next to Jane Foster by the campfire in the first Thor film, he's able to talk to her about the Yggdrasil and how all of the Nine Realms are connected to each other. The man has also been around for over 1,500 years and has traveled throughout the galaxy. So why is it that Thor is bizarrely ignorant of some of some of the very basic things that happen on Earth?

Thor thinks that he can pilot a spaceship, yet doesn't own a computer and doesn't fully understand emails (or as he calls them, electronic letters). Thor refers to Dr. Strange as a wizard, but do they call magic users on Asgard wizards? For someone that's lived for so long, the man sometimes acts like he knows little!

1 HOW WAS THOR STOPPED BY ELECTRICITY IN RAGNAROK?

Obedience Disks were the devices that The Grandmaster used to enslave the gladiators that fought in his arena. In the comics, the disks were powerful enough to incapacitate both the Hulk as well as Silver Surfer. In Thor: Ragnarok, the Valkyrie placed an Obedience Disk on Thor and used it multiple times to prevent him from rebelling with a powerful shock.

Wait a second, how does an electric shock incapacitate the God of Thunder? Can you use intense cold to stop Iceman or extreme heat to take down the Human Torch? Why did they opt with electricity as opposed to some other form of energy that could produce paralysis? Perhaps he really is the God of Hammers after all!
