The Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser trailer is garnering lots of attention, in no small part due to the presence of Doctor Strange. It now appears the movie leads directly leads directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness -- and with director Sam Raimi serving as a bridge between that movie and the Spider-Man trilogy that No Way Home is drawing from, Strange is getting almost as much attention as Peter Parker himself.

The Multiverse, in particular, is set to serve as the crux of No Way Home's story, which has serious implications for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But outside of potentially bringing back fan-favorite characters, the spell Peter asks Strange to cast in No Way Home seems to open the franchise up to different realities. This, in turn, begs the question of whether the Sorcerer Supreme can merely contact parallel timelines, or if he's powerful enough to create one on his own.

Loki and Sylvie Looking Upon The Sacred Timeline

According to the MCU's lore, anyone can create a variant universe; all they have to do is diverge from the events as prescribed in the prime timeline. Loki Season 1 spent a good deal of time spelling out the specifics, while What If…? explores the kinds of vast differences that occur if one tiny decision is made differently. The spell in No Way Home, however, entails too much magic and deliberation to fall into that category. Rather than being a nexus event -- something seemingly ordinary that sets the timeline on a different path -- Strange’s magic could represent the creation of a new timeline without the need for a change in the timeline.

Certainly, the visuals from the scene where Strange casts his spell suggest that. The spell entails a large glowing ring encircling the casting area, which closely resembles the ring of the Sacred Timeline in Loki Season 1, Episode 6, “For All Time. Always.” And when Peter starts to express doubts about his wish to undo past events, the rings begin to shake and then go completely berserk as the two humans are thrust into a kaleidoscopic effect.

Everything is supposition at this point, but based on what fans know about both the timeline and Strange, the idea that he could create his own parallel universe is carried out in this moment. The Sorcerer Supreme’s trademark arrogance is on full display, and even without the Time Stone, his powers are at their peak, at least according to Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron. That indicates Strange not only has the power to create his own universe, but that he also possesses the overconfidence to attempt it.

And yet, it would be keeping with Parker’s request. The spell could have been used to send Peter into a new universe, one where he was never outed and his friends and family can stay safe. That would mean ensuring that the change didn’t cause any “butterfly effects” -- seemingly random events with cataclysmic consequences -- which might involve shaping the new timeline to meet certain precise conditions. It’s also something that may fracture when Peter has second thoughts, as the increasingly elaborate details of the wish make avoiding some future catastrophe exceedingly difficult.

Of course, it may simply be a matter of finding the timeline where all of those conditions are met instead of creating one on his own. That would explain the way the rings seem to collide in the teaser trailer, as well as the intersecting timelines that produce the villains from non-MCU movies. But considering the importance of the Multiverse in Phase 4 and how vital both Strange and Spidey seem to be to it, any explanation that doesn’t entail massive amounts of power from the Sorcerer Supreme might not feel up to the task.

To see how far Doctor Strange's powers stretch, Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on Dec. 17.
