Marvel Studios and Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home was an unprecedented success at the box office. So much so that it has now earned its saga a place above many of the most successful film franchises of all time, second only to one iconic title.

A study conducted by Betway showed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man trilogy, thanks to No Way Home, is only below the Star Wars franchise. The study ranked each franchise out of 90, with points given for traits such as box office earnings, number of awards won, trailer searches and more. Star Wars scored 69.3 out of 90, while the MCU's Spider-Man scored 65.3, beating the likes of Marvel, Harry Potter and James Bond.

No Way Home's Success

No Way Home arguably does the heavy lifting for the Spider-Man trilogy, with its near $2 billion box office take and the appeal of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield from two previous Spider-Man film sagas. Though its predecessors performed admirably on their own. For comparison, Spider-Man: Homecoming earned a total of $880.2 million worldwide, while the sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, grossed $1.1 billion. As solid as those earnings are, those three films that comprise the Spider-Man trilogy cannot match the Star Wars franchise's $10 billion box office earnings across 12 films.

Despite the MCU film's immense success, there are some, including some of the film's cast, that aren't necessarily interested in a sequel, though one was confirmed to be in development by Marvel and Sony. Actor Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned Leeds, previously discussed the prospect of a fourth instalment and called No Way Home "a poignant ending to our movies. It really puts an exclamation on the continuance of Spider-Man, but maybe not with us, and I think that's a great thing."

The Next Spider-Man Adventure

There are reports, however, that star Tom Holland has already closed a deal for future Spider-Man films, though Marvel Studios and Sony have not yet made any official announcements. It is currently unknown how many films his contract now covers, though it was reported that the contract does not include any appearances on the MCU's Disney+ projects.

It is also believed that the next Spider-Man film may hit theaters as soon as 2024, near the end of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Details are scarce at the current time, with unconfirmed rumors suggesting it will take place in the aftermath of the series Daredevil: Born Again and focus on a street-level story for the Wall-Crawler.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
