With Tom Holland’s Spider-Man positioned to be a prominent character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at least for the foreseeable future, and Sony attempting to beef up its Spider-Man-related offerings, now feels like the best time for the web-slinger to meet Venom. Spider-Man’s famous foe's 2018 standalone film became a hit, and now a highly anticipated sequel is in the works. So at this point the two characters crossing paths on the big screen would be a dream for a lot of fans. And there's a scenario where the two become allies, and Spider-Man even has the potential to bond with the symbiote.

We last saw both characters in situations that could provide the perfect set-up for a team-up. In the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, The Daily Bugle released a video created by Mysterio that framed Spider-Man for the drone attack in London as well as the supervillain's death. The video then wrapped up by revealing Peter Parker as Spider-Man's secret identity. The revelation is likely to send Peter on the run, and avoiding the public attention that comes with an Avengers-level threat. In fact, what he could really use is a smart reporter who’s willing to bend the rules, like Eddie Brock, to help him clear his name.

Meanwhile, in the post-credits scene of Venom, Brock, with the symbiote, interviews Cletus Kasady, a character comic fans will recognize as the sociopathic serial killer who bonds with the symbiote known as Carnage. Carnage will likely become a major threat in Venom 2 and his abilities exceed those of Venom, plus Kasady makes the symbiote even more violent and dangerous. Additionally, Naomie Harris is joining the cast as Shriek, a homicidal supervillain who often teams up with and dates Kasady in the comics. This formidable team is easily too much for Venom to handle alone, so bringing on a super-powered ally makes a lot of sense.

A team-up between the two has been necessary to take down Carnage in the comics, and this movie version of Eddie Brock doesn’t have the same animosity toward the web-slinger as his previous incarnations. In addition, it would make sense for Spider-Man to bond with Venom as they would both get something out of it. The move would also go along with what we’ve already seen of Holland's Peter Parker.

The obvious benefit for Venom is absorbing Spider-Man’s abilities. The symbiote’s strength combined with Parker’s agility, wall-climbing ability and Spider-Sense (referred to as his Peter-tingle by Aunt May in Far From Home) would be a great arsenal of powers to take into battle. It’s also not too much of a stretch to assume the large database Parker can access through his Stark tech includes some information on Shriek as Stark, the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. appear to know of most super-powered humans on Earth. So a bond with Spider-Man would better arm Venom to fight both Carnage and Shriek.

For Spider-Man, bonding with Venom would provide the opportunity to study and understand the species on a physiological level. This would also be a direct way to analyze how Carnage’s abilities are unique from Venom’s and come up with a plan to fight him. The MCU version of Peter Parker has also expressed a strong interest in science and learning about the unknown. Given that Brock is now well-adjusted to the bond, experiencing it for himself would be hard for Peter to pass up, especially if it could enhance his own powers.

In its next phase, the MCU will likely introduce a big bad to top Thanos, which could mean the franchise's heroes will need to find ways to get stronger. Bonding with Venom would be a great way to expand what Spider-Man can do while giving fans what they want. While this would mean Parker and Brock wouldn’t have the professional rivalry they had in the comics, the MCU has made plenty of changes to their characters with many more hits than misses. This also doesn’t mean we’d never see Spider-Man battle Venom, as the symbiote has bonded with a multitude of hosts in the comics. One of those hosts is Flash Thompson, Peter’s bully, a character who’s already established in the MCU.

Spider-Man bonding with Venom would be a great twist that could benefit both the MCU and the Sony-based Spider-Verse. It has the potential to open up a realm of possibilities for both franchises.

Directed by Andy Serkis and starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Venom 2 is scheduled for release on Oct. 2.
