Among the side effects created by Ms. Marvel is how the general public in the Marvel Cinematic Universe knows about events at which they were not present. The show has come up with some exceedingly clever notions to help explain it all, particularly Scott Lang’s podcast “Big Me, Little Me,” which dished on the particulars of the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame. That, in turn, has opened up a whole new series of questions about which events in the MCU are public knowledge or not.

The disposition of Scarlet Witch, in particular, presents a dilemma. Wanda Maximoff has played a central role in two MCU Phase Four projects so far -- WandaVision and Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness -- which combined to make her an unquestioned villain, at least for now. But how much do the rank-and-file people in the MCU know about that?

That’s of particular interest when it comes to Wanda Maximoff, whose efforts to process her grief in the wake of Endgame caused much of the trouble in the MCU during Phase Four. That includes turning the entire town of Westview into her unwilling supporting cast in the events of WandaVision and a Darkhold-fueled rampage in Multiverse of Madness. And yet, despite the spectacular -- possibly universe-altering -- impact of it all, there is a non-zero chance that no one outside of the MCU’s magical community has the first idea any of it happened.

Little of Multiverse of Madness takes place in the public view. Sure, Doctor Strange battles with Gargantos on the streets of Manhattan at the beginning of the film, but frankly, that just another weekday in the MCU. Once he seeks out Wanda for aid, the remainder of the action takes place far from public view. Strange presumably doesn’t speak of his extra-dimensional adventures, leaving the public in the dark about Wanda’s turn and the ensuing threat to reality.

WandaVision carries far more potential for public exposure since Wanda effectively took an entire town hostage. However, the waters are still muddy as far as public perception goes. It’s likely a matter of public record since the survivors would tell their story. And with the situation ending up in the hands of the principled Jimmy Woo, it’s hard to imagine any of Wanda’s victims being detained or silenced. But there has been no mention of the events outside of WandaVision, and it’s entirely possible that the incident got covered up to prevent panic.

Ms. Marvel has become a terrific sounding board for the people of the MCU. Kamala Khan and her friends are literal hero worshippers who follow the comings and goings of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes the same way they would a rock band. The official timeline order on Disney+ helps facilitate that since Ms. Marvel takes place at the end of the current MCU timeline after the events of the first season of Moon Knight. If it’s public knowledge, Kamala probably knows about it through “Big Me, Little Me” or a similar outlet such as a book or news article.

As of the middle of the season, there has been no word on the Scarlet Witch, and with Khan’s own superheroic adventures rapidly taking center stage, Wanda may not get a mention at all. But that leaves the status of one of the MCU’s most powerful figures up in the air. Wanda may be gone from the franchise for good, or she may return as a hero or a threat. However, until Ms. Marvel or another project formally lets the cat out of the bag, all of her post-Blip activity -- and her standing as a potential danger to reality -- may still be a closely guarded secret.
