Very few fictional characters are universally loved but every character has at least a few fans who love them, but Marvel’s fandom as a whole has occasionally decided that a character is unforgivable. This can be for any number of reasons, including the relationships that character has, their actions, or just the fandom’s investment in their goals.

The list of characters that have generally been disliked is as varied as the reasons they have received this reception. Some of them were supposed to be hated but some just fell into it but developed a devoted fandom of their defenders. Either way, the reaction to these characters was strong.

10 Tony Stark's methods aren't for everyone

While he is arguably the reason the MCU is as popular as it is, there are plenty of fans who are quite tired of Iron Man. Some of this stems from the Team Iron Man vs Team Cap marketing of Civil War, both in the comics and the movies, with Tony standing on the side of the Sokovia Accords.

Some of it though comes down to fans seeing his flaws as too much for their tastes. They point to his pro-capitalism, billionaire status and find his rash behavior and treatment of his teammates, which often endangers those closest to him, as reasons he’s not the hero they want.

9 Steve Rogers chose the wrong side

The other side of the Civil War debate faced much of the same backlash for his part in the Avengers break-up. Even before he objected to the Sokovia Accords though, some fans did not connect with Captain America’s outlook. Many saw him as a tool for propaganda rather than a fully fleshed-out character.

While Cap definitely has a solid fanbase—especially when he is in close quarters with Bucky Barnes—there is still a vocal number of fans that don’t agree with the First Avenger’s decisions or his symbolism.

8 John Walker is supposed to be hated

In the comics, John Walker is not the most likable hero out there. In fact, even his fellow heroes aren’t fans of him or his work sometimes, but that is the point. Fandom definitely got the point, but unlike some other characters in the MCU and on the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, fans made a point of hating the character, not the actor who portrayed him.

Praise for Wyatt Russell’s take on Walker nearly overshadowed the hate for the character, and Russell embraced it, enjoying playing off type. It became very clear that while the fandom hated John Walker, they loved hating him.

7 Clint Barton isn't doing enough

Hate might be a strong word, but the MCU hasn’t shown Hawkeye in the best light yet, and it shows in the fandom. While he does have a devoted following of fans, he is repeatedly labeled the boring Avenger—even above the boy scout Captain America—and nothing shown so far has changed the minds of many fans.

With the Disney+ series coming by the end of 2021, it’s possible some love could be thrown Clint’s way, as he works his way through mentorhood with Kate Bishop and dodges Yelena Belova’s hit on him. Either way though, he could really use some love from more of the fandom.

6 Natasha Romanoff was too much for some

Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) in Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff was the first female hero to become an Avenger but despite that—or perhaps because of that—she faced a lot of hate from several different corners of fandom. She was the token girl for many, too sexy for others and unfairly considered  “useless” by even more. While the more misogynistic takes on her role in the Avengers have faded over time, they are still easy to find in certain fandom spaces.

It took until 2021 for Natasha to get her own movie, and even before it came out, several fans deemed it, unnecessary or pandering to female fans.

5 Sharon Carter just can't catch a break

Sharon Carter in the MCU

Few characters have gotten the wrath of fans in the way Sharon Carter has, both in the movies and in the comics. Since the days of Ed Brubaker’s run on Captain America, and the Death of Captain America arc, fans have been very vocal in their dislike of Agent 13.

This was compounded in the MCU with the controversial kiss in Captain America: Civil War, and Sharon’s lack of appearance before the Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Some of this dislike bled over to actress Emily VanCamp as well.

4 Nick Fury Lies

Nick Fury

Nick Fury’s character has always been shady and even antagonistic against the more cut and dry heroes of the Marvel universe. This was true in the MCU as well, but the fandom reaction hit a fever pitch after the first Avengers movie. With the #CoulsonLives movement in full swing, it was tied very heavily to the #FuryLies tag.

Many fans blamed Fury for Coulson’s death and saw him as an obstacle for the Avengers rather than an ally. This hate has lessened over the years, especially after Captain Marvel but it’s still easy to find anti-Nick Fury content in some corners of the fandom.

3 Ralph Bohner faked fans out

WandaVision - Evan Peters as Pietro

When Evan Peters showed up in WandaVision, claiming to be Pietro Maximoff, the internet exploded with theories about multiverses and how the X-Men universe could be canon within the MCU, and how those characters could be worked into the MCU. Unfortunately, things did not turn out the way fans wanted.

The reveal that he was in fact, Ralph Bohner, an out-of-work actor and seeming slacker extraordinaire enraged fans that felt like they’d been tricked by the creators. The let-down of that lost potential means that Ralph, if he ever appears again, will not be a fan favorite any time soon.

2 Star-Lord got half the universe killed

Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

Peter Quill hasn’t always been hated by the fandom, but his actions in Avengers: Infinity War definitely got on some fans’ bad side. When he reacted emotionally to the confirmation that Thanos had killed Gamora, and broke the Mad Titan out of Mantis’s grip, he cost half of the universe their lives.

That would be enough to turn a lot of fans against Peter, and had he survived the dusting, it’s likely other heroes would have gone that route as well.

1 Carol Danvers became a symbol

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel movie poster from the MCU

The story of Captain Marvel’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes has become something of an internet legend. Fans, upset that the Carol Danvers version of the character was leading the movie instead of the original male Captain Marvel, downvoted the movie before it was even released.

The rating recovered eventually, with more people seeing—and enjoying—the movie, but hatred for Carol Danvers as a symbol of diversifying superhero media is still strong throughout the internet.
