The MCU's Marvel Zombies series will be a lot shorter than fans might have suspected.

Writer Zeb Wells revealed to ComicBook.com that the What If...? spinoff show will only run for four episodes, adding, "I'm not sure when it comes yet, but it's looking really cool."

Wells, who has writing credits for Marvel Comics and Robot Chicken, wasn't involved with the What If...? episode that featured a zombie apocalypse taking place on an alternate version of Earth. However, he said that after seeing the episode he was primed and ready for the call from Marvel Studios about Marvel Zombies, saying, "I love that episode too, so when I got the call that they were going to do a spin-off from that episode, I was like 'oh yeah, let's do it'."

The Walking Dead Are Coming to the MCU

The animated spinoff series is set to carry on from the end of the What If...? episode, taking inspiration from its cliffhanger ending. The final moments saw the survivors of the Quantum Virus (which turned some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes into the undead) heading to supposed safety in Wakanda. Unfortunately for the remaining heroes, a zombified Thanos was glimpsed in all his dreadful glory waiting for them.

The creatives behind the show have revealed the first batch of zombies will include an arrow-filled Hawkeye, as well as a cut-in-half Captain America. The Abomination, Ghost, Captain Marvel, Okoye, and the Scarlet Witch will also be given a fresh-from-the-grave look, as will Ikaris from Eternals.

Facing off against the zombies will be Yelena Belova, Shang-Chi and Katy, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. In addition, the show will also introduce a new post-apocalyptic Widows team and a biker gang of Skrulls.

Marvel Zombies will also be the first of Marvel Studios' Disney+ series to carry a Mature rating for TV, with studio executives promising plenty of gore and terror. So far all of Marvel's live-action Disney+ original shows, and the animated series What If...?, have been rated acceptable for a much younger TV audience.

The upcoming show is believed to be based upon the events in Marvel Comics' original Marvel Zombies limited series, which was written by co-creator of the Image Comics' title The Walking Dead Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Sean Phillips. The original print series of Zombies ran for five issues from December 2005 to April 2006. Marvel has revisited Marvel Zombies for various sequels and spinoffs since then, with the alternate universe proving popular with fans.

Marvel Zombies does not yet have a release date on Disney+.
