Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed how Kang the Conquerer will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as multiple variants throughout the Multiverse Saga.

At San Diego Comic-Con, the studio confirmed the storyline of the recently christened Multiverse Saga would build to the sequel Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. One crucial villain in the sequel, Kang the Conquerer, will take the torch from Thanos as the next big bad of the MCU in the escalating event storyline. And speaking about how Kang the Conquerer would be influenced by the multiverse concept, Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed that Jonathan Majors' supervillain role would revolve around multiple versions.

"It's really impressive what Jonathan Majors is able to do, and all the different incarnations, variants, if you will, of Kang that we will see him do. It's really pretty cool," Feige told comicbook.com at the big event. As portrayed by Jonathan Majors, a variant of Kang the Conquerer was introduced in the season finale of Marvel Studio's Disney+ series Loki. This particular variant, who managed the Sacred Timeline behind the TVA, went by He Who Remains; a perfect demonstration of Kang's ability to destroy all other variations of himself across the multiverse.

In his debrief, He Who Remains revealed his identity as a scientist who discovered the multiverse and initiated contact with variants of himself in different universes. The interaction between universes eventually led to incursions and a multiverse war that saw versions of Kang try to destroy each other, leaving the TVA tinkerer as the only version left. Similar to Thanos' "inevitable" theory, He Who Remains believed that his death and the destruction of the Sacred Timeline would lead to history repeating itself.

In the post-credit scene of the Loki Season finale, Tom Hiddleston's Loki variant arrived in an alternative timeline after the destruction of the Sacred Timeline. In this timeline, a different variant of Kang the Conquerer was shown as the statue outside the TVA building, teasing the timeline's unique Kang.

In the comics, the TVA and He Who Remains initially had very different descriptions than their respective adaptations in the MCU. Unlike the character's creepy old guy description in the comics, He Who Remains merged with Kang the Conquerer and became the threatening, ultimate villain intertwined in time travel stories. The TVA also shifted to an organization guarding against a multiverse.

Running for 16 issues throughout Marvel Comics' main Avengers title, Kang Dynasty, also known as Kang War, was an epic storyline in Kurt Busiek's post-Heroes Reborn Avengers run. The story begins with Kang and his son Marcus invading Earth in order to save the planet by taking it over after having seen a potentially dark future. While the Avengers reformed to defend Earth, they found the fight more difficult than anticipated. Interestingly, the storyline showcased one of the few times an Avengers villain had a lasting victory.

Loki Season 2 is planned to premiere on Disney+ in summer 2023.
