The Green Goliath, aka Marvel's Hulk, is one of the most beloved and most physically imposing superheroes ever to grace the pages of comics and shine on the silver screen. Bruce Banner, aka Hulk's alter-ego, is a genius scientist who experiments with gamma rays and uses himself as a guinea pig, leading to the creation of The Hulk. While Hulk has been portrayed in an excellent television series, a subpar Eric Bana movie, and in multiple animated series, his most successful iteration has been in the MCU.

Edward Norton portrayed Bruce Banner in 2008's underrated The Incredible Hulk, and Mark Ruffalo replaced Norton in 2012's The Avengers. Ruffalo has portrayed the character ever since and became a prominent member of the MCU's Avengers. Often, The Hulk is a force to be reckoned with but on numerous occasions, he has shown that he isn't a true hero.

10 Crippling Blonsky & Destroying A College Campus In A Fight Against Ross' Military

While it's most definitely General Ross' fault for attacking Bruce Banner on a college campus, what the Hulk does to Emil Blonsky is very disturbing. Blonsky volunteers to take the super-soldier serum, which was used in World War II for a certain Patriotic Avenger, and he leads Ross' soldiers into battle on a college campus. As Betty Ross is walking Bruce through the campus, Ross and Blonsky send troops to capture him. This leads to Banner Hulking out of a window and completely cleans the floor with Ross' troops; however, Blonsky shows off his new skills and is able to hang with the Jade Giant. Blonsky then takes off his communications device and doesn't listen to Ross' orders to stand down.

This leads to Blonsky asking Hulk if that's all he's got and he gets his answer quickly after, with Hulk kicking him so hard he flies across a field and smashes into a large tree. Of course, Hulk was goated into responding with violence and he had to defend himself, yet it isn't very heroic to cripple another person and shatter their bones against an oak tree.

9 Stealing Betty Ross Back From Her New Boyfriend & Unintentionally Putting Her In Danger

Betty Ross has a complicated relationship with Bruce and her father, however, she never stopped loving Bruce and this factored into her helping him once again. Betty seemed to be in a serious relationship with Ty Burrell's Leonard, who was a psychiatrist at the same school Betty worked at. As soon as Bruce comes back into town, Betty leaves Leonard alone at Stan's restaurant and tracks down her old boyfriend. Then, she lets Bruce stay at her house and hide from her father, even walking him to the bus station the next day.

This leads to a Hulk incident and a fight against her father and his troops, with Betty begging her father to come out and face her. Although Hulk seems to protect her from an accidental shooting by General Ross' helicopters, he still picks her up and takes her with him on a cold, rainy night. Later, Betty is put into another dangerous situation while Hulk and Abomination fight but is seemingly saved by Hulk once again. However, it seems as if Betty just stayed with Leonard and didn't chase down her ex-lover, she most likely wouldn't have constantly been put in danger by a not-so-jolly Green Giant.

8 Wreaking Havoc Against Abomination In Downtown Harlem

Bruce Banner convinces Betty and her father to let him jump out of a moving helicopter so that he will turn into the Hulk and can stop the Abomination from more destruction. Bruce Banner may have had good intentions, but adding another huge monster into the picture spelled certain doom for the city and people of Harlem. Abomination and Hulk legitimately almost killed each other and Harlem looked like a war zone after their battle, with cabs and cop cars ripped in half and many buildings on fire.

Hulk did save Betty and General Ross from an exploding helicopter with his giant clap but the two monsters were so obsessed with beating each other, that the innocent people in the background almost paid the ultimate price. What makes it even worse is that after Hulk defeats Abomination, he almost chokes him to death but is stopped by Betty, and then Hulk just disappears from the New York area, leaving a city in ruins to go learn yoga in the mountains.

7 Bruce Banner Pretending To Scare Black Widow In Their First Meeting In Kolkata

Kolkata (or Calcutta) was a quiet place for Bruce to hang out and not worry about becoming the Hulk, plus he also helped the villagers if they were sick. When Nick Fury decides to round up a group of superhuman individuals, he sends Natasha Romanoff to track down Bruce Banner, which frightens the former Russian super-spy. However, Banner isn't pleased to see Romanoff and asks if she is there to kill him, to which she responds "No of course not. Nick Fury seems to trust you." Banner assumes the place is surrounded, but Romanoff tells him it's just him and her, which leads to Natasha explaining the Tesseract and Loki to the gamma-induced scientist.

After the conversation goes awry, Banner shouts at Natasha and tells her to stop lying to him. This leads to Natasha pulling a gun out from under the table and leaves her visibly shaken. Although, Banner was just teasing bringing out the Hulk and knew all along that the place was surrounded with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, which is something a non-heroic person would do.

6 Hulking Out & Chasing Black Widow On The Hellicarrier

As the team is arguing on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier, a mind-controlled Hawkeye set off an explosive arrow, sending Black Widow and Bruce Banner to the level below. Black Widow ends up being okay but then sees Bruce starting to transform into the Hulk, which sends her into an instant panic. She tries to calm him down but it's too late and Banner starts growing into the Jade Giant, who is also being mind-controlled by Loki's staff and is even angrier than normal.

The Hulk starts to hunt down Black Widow, but thankfully she's very skilled and can move quickly, which saved her from being completely smashed. Hulk finally gets a good glimpse of Black Widow, who has a limp from her fall, and begins chasing her through the Hellicarrier. Leaving a path of destruction in his wake, the extremely angry Hulk catches up to her and is about to backhand her into the wall before Thor tackles the big guy and saves Widow.

5 Not Being Able To Lift Mjolnir In His First Fight With Thor

Thor saves Black Widow from an angry and agitated Hulk on the Hellicarrier, and really nails the Green Goliath with his trusty hammer, Mjolnir. Although, before Mjolnir makes an appearance, Thor tries to convince Hulk that they are not his enemies but makes the mistake of calling him Banner. This enrages the Hulk even more and as he's preparing to run through the Asgardian, the magical Mjolnir comes to Thor and he knocks Hulk into a fighter jet.

Mjolnir is laying there on the ground so naturally, Hulk thinks to use it, but much to his chagrin, he can't lift it. Hulk continues to try and pick it up but even digging his feet into the cement doesn't help him grasp it, mainly because he's not worthy and at this point in time, wasn't considered a true hero.

4 Bruce Banner Helping Tony Stark To Create The Sociopathic Ultron

Tony Stark told Bruce Banner that "I see a suit of armor around the world," prompting Tony to use Loki's staff to build artificial intelligence and be prepared for another alien invasion. However, while Tony is the one that always takes the blame for Ultron, it's easy to forget that, without Bruce Banner, Ultron would have never been created. It took Tony and Bruce, along with the Mind Stone from Loki's staff, to bring this murderous robot to life.

Additionally, after Ultron is created, he wants a new body for himself and steals Helen Cho's regeneration cradle, which is taken back by the Avengers and examined by Bruce and Tony again. Once again, the two science bros show that they don't learn and decide to build an android for themselves, which luckily works out in the form of The Vision but could have easily been another disaster. Tony was right about one thing though, both he and Bruce Banner are "mad scientists."

3 Destroying A City While Under Wanda's Spell & Fighting The Hulkbuster

When the Avengers go to confront Ultron for the first time, Tony, Thor, and Cap find him in a boat alongside Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. The fight goes back and forth until Hawkeye gets the upper hand on the young Wanda by sticking an arrow on her forehead and shocking her. Despite being injured, Wanda tells Pietro that she wants the big one and looks at a puzzled Bruce Banner in the Quinjet.

Ultron warns Tony that he has to stop Dr. Banner, which prompts the armored Avenger to call VERONICA, a piece of Stark tech made just to stop the Hulk. Stark traps Hulk for a moment but when Hulk escapes, Stark suits up in the Hulkbuster armor and the two go toe-to-toe. Hulk is under the influence of Wanda's power but even so, the fact he can get so violent leads to another destroyed city and sends the team into hiding for a while.

2 Nearly Killing Thor & Fighting As The Grandmaster's Champion On Sakaar

The Hulk decided to leave Earth after the team stopped Ultron and his robotic army, thinking that he would be protecting Black Widow and innocent people from himself. However, on his travels in the Quinjet, Hulk ends up going through a wormhole and ends up on the dangerous planet of Sakaar. When Thor also ends up on Sakaar, he is kidnapped by a young warrior and is brought to a man known as The Grandmaster. Thor is forced to fight his champion, who is later confirmed to be Hulk,  in a gladiator-style tournament, and only one can win.

Originally, Thor is excited to see Hulk but is quickly surprised when Hulk charges at him, and the two trade blows back and forth. Thor gets the upper hand but is shocked by The Grandmaster, which leads to him falling over, and Hulk takes advantage by jumping up high and smashing his friend into the ground. Thor survives and rekindles his friendship with Hulk, who is living in lap of luxury in one of the Grandmaster's homes and explains to Thor how he ended up on Sakaar.

1 Refusing To Come Back Out In Infinity War After Thanos Lays Waste To Him

hulk thanos infinity war

Hulk is with Thor and the Asgardian refugees when The Mad Titan and his Dark Order attack their ship, literally breaking it into two separate pieces. Thanos asks Loki for the Tesseract or he will kill Thor, who had already taken a beating up until this point. Loki says he prefers Thor's death but quickly changes his mind when Thanos nearly blows up his brother's head with the Power Stone.

After a little back and forth, Loki offers up the Tesseract to Thanos but tells The Mad Titan that "we have a Hulk," which leads to Hulk coming out of the shadows and knocking Thanos out of the way. Hulk gets a few shots in but is quickly overpowered by Thanos and is knocked unconscious, staying there until Heimdall sends him back to Earth. Throughout the whole Infinity War movie, Hulk refuses to come out and help, leaving Bruce in a vulnerable spot and leaving the Avengers without their most powerful member.
