Frank Grillo, who played the HYDRA supervillain Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, isn't quite done with playing the character.

In an interview with CinePOP, Grillo was asked if mercenary Brock Rumlow might get his own origin story, not unlike the recently-released Black Widow. "No, I think Crossbones is a secondary villain in that universe," he answered. "I think you'll see him pop up now and again... you'll see Crossbones in the animated What If...? series." He added, "Crossbones will live. I just don't know in what area of the Marvel Universe yet."

Grillo first joined the MCU in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Brock Rumlow, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent whose loyalty secretly to the fascist cell HYDRA. He made a brief return in Captain America: Civil War, where Rumlow -- now armored up as the villain Crossbones -- fought the Avengers and met his demise. He made a cameo during the time heist in Avengers: Endgame and most recently voiced the character in the third What If...? episode, "What If...The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?"

Earlier this year, Grillo stated his belief that Crossbones's time in the MCU is finished. "They're done with me," he said. "Because of the way the stories wound up being told and just how big the stories became, the Crossbones of it wasn't really part of the future of the Avengers." However, he's still open to reprising the role. When asked if he'd ever return for another live-action project, Grillo answered "Oh yeah. I often say 'When Marvel calls, I pick up the phone.'"
