Thor star Chirs Hemsworth believes the Marvel Cinematic Universe could save movie theaters around the world.

Speaking to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Hemsworth was asked whether the Marvel movies take up too much "box office oxygen." The Thor actor responded, "I hear those concerns, too. That [the MCU] takes up so much real estate, [and] is there enough room for the other things to exist, the art house films and the smaller films we love and admire equally."

Following the suggestion that Marvel movies could have the ability to "restore the moviegoing habit," Hemsworth continued,  "Films [like Marvel] that you can best appreciate on the big screen, those will draw people out of their homes again. I’m with you on that."

MCU critics like Martin Scorsese have called out Marvel movies for their monopolization of theaters. Still, there's no escaping the popularity of the MCU. Since 2008, the franchise has grown to become a 23-movie powerhouse that shows no sign of slowing down. There are already ambitious plans in place for Phase 4 and beyond, with Disney also growing the MCU with shows on the Disney+ streaming platform.

Considering nine Marvel movies have made over one billion dollars at the box office, MCU films -- and superhero movies, in general -- mean big business for cinemas, so Hemsworth makes a strong point. With the cinema industry facing uncertain times due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a Marvel movie may be just what movie theaters need when everything gets back to normal.

While Hemsworth's other roles have included the likes of Snow White and the Hunstman, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and Men in Black: International, he is best-known for playing Thor. Despite the recent pandemic, four MCU movies are planned to release in 2021, and that's before taking into account non-MCU films like Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which are based on a Marvel characters.

Written and directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. The film arrives in theaters Feb. 18, 2022.
