After the latest trailer for The Eternals, fans are finally starting to get an idea of what the movie is going to be about. The trailer suggests that the Eternals have been on Earth for millennia but have vowed to never interfere in the issues of mankind. However, it appears as though a significant enough threat has made its way to Earth, prompting the team to jump into action.

Additionally, the trailer teases a lot of things that eagle-eyed fans have managed to catch after watching it frame by frame. It's worth mentioning that Marvel Studios is notorious for movie trailer misdirects, so some things may be intentionally misleading to keep a few secrets. Regardless of the approach, fans have tons of questions about the upcoming supergroup movie.

10 Who Is The Strongest Eternal?

Gilgamesh of the Eternals

Gilgamesh is known as the powerhouse of the Eternals, capable of lifting 100 tons with relative ease. The other Eternals are able to channel cosmic energy into their bodies, granting them boosts in strength, but Gilgamesh is on a different level. He too can channel energy to grant himself additional strength, but also create a powerful and durable exoskeleton.

With such a strong character entering the MCU, many fans are hoping for a friendly bout between a few of the other MCU tanks such as Thor or Captain Marvel. If the Eternals had been available to help against Thanos, Gilgamesh alone could have turned the tides with his awesome power.

9 Who Is The Fastest Eternal?

Lauren Ridloff Makkari eternals mcu

Makkari is the resident speedster for the Eternals, clocking in around Mach 3, or roughly 1,550 MPH. The other Eternals can amp up their speed much like they can amp up their strength, but Makkari is the only one that can consistently reach these speeds.

In the comics, Makkari is the scout for the Eternals, finding new planets for them to visit. However, this character has been completely overhauled for the MCU so she may have another role. Another change to the character beyond gender is making her deaf, which makes her immune to her own sonic booms when she travels at Mach speeds; and the actress portraying Makkari happens to be deaf as well.

8 Who Is The Most Battle-Ready Eternal?

Thena wielded a constructed weapon

Thena is the Eternal with the most battle sense and the most experience with all types of weapons and techniques. Her connection to cosmic energy allows her to construct any weapon she can think of out of pure energy, much like Dr. Strange and the students of Kamar-Taj. However, her weapons appear to be a bit more robust than anything seen by mystic arts practitioners thus far.

With such a huge actress tied to the role of Thena, Angelina Jolie, fans expect a big role for her in the MCU. With Jolie's track record of action films such as Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Salt, she will likely be an excellent fighter and wielder of weapons for the Eternals.

7 Who Is Their Leader?

Ikaris of the Eternals

Ikaris is the proud leader of the Eternals, and while he isn't the strongest physically, in the comics he is considered to be one of the most powerful Eternals. Richard Madden brings leadership experience to the role having played Robb Stark in HBO's Game of Thrones.

The latest trailer shows the Eternals in a scene reminiscent of the shwarma lunch after The Avengers where Ikaris jokes about taking over as the new leader of the Avengers. This is met with laughter from his team, but if Ikaris can prove his worth as a true leader, the Avengers could add another alien to their roster.

6 What Are Eternals, Exactly?

Eternals group shot, from the Marvel teaser

The Eternals in the comics are one of the many, many humanoid species that the Celestials created during their experimentation throughout the cosmos. The Celestials intended for the Eternals to be guardians of Earth, which eventually led to war against their evil counterparts, the Deviants.

The latest trailer shows the Eternals arriving on Earth millennia ago in a highly advanced alien craft. Whether or not they've been assigned to protect Earth remains to be seen, but it could very well open the door to the formal introduction of the Celestials. After all, Ego was only just a brain, perhaps the brain that fell out of the Celestial head called Knowhere.

5 Where Do Their Powers Come From?

Marvel Eternity and Infinity

The Eternals' powers come from their ability to harness cosmic energy and re-appropriate it as they see fit. In the comics, the Eternals are able to channel energy for a myriad of purposes, with most having a special ability. However, in the MCU it appears as though the specialty will be the focus to allow for individuality and less confusion.

Gilgamesh uses the energy to boost his strength to insane levels and cloak himself in his durable exoskeleton. Makkari uses the energy to reach Mach speeds daily. Thena uses it to create weapons out of pure energy. The other six Eternals have powers such as telekinesis, matter manipulation, teleportation, and flight, though each one's specialty has yet to be fully revealed.

4 Why Do Their Names Sound Familiar?

Neil Gaiman Norse Mythology feature

Many of the names of the Eternals are based on ancient human mythologies. The suggestion here is that the Eternals were actually the gods from ancient mythologies, lending their names to classic mythological heroes and gods. Gilgamesh is of course the fabled epic hero of ancient Babylon, considering his feats of strength it very well could be the Gilgamesh of the Eternals.

While the spellings are slightly off, some other familiar names include Ikaris and Sersi who are characters from Greek Mythology, Thena is a reference to Athena who is a crucially important Greek god, and Phastos could be a reference to the Greek city of Phaistos or the blacksmith of the gods, Hephaestus. Considering the Eternals arrive when humanity is still young, they very well could have shaped the world without realizing it.

3 How Does Dane Whitman's Black Knight Factor In?

Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman with Sersi in The Eternals

The Black Knight, aka Dane Whitman, is set to make his MCU debut in The Eternals though, unlike the titular heroes, he is actually a human from Earth. He appears to be romantically involved with one of the Eternals, Sersi. However, Sersi also appears to be involved with Ikaris, which could make for a tricky love triangle.

Dane is imbued with the power of the Black Knight when he wields the ancient and powerful Ebony Blade. Given how long the Eternals have been around, they may be in possession of such a relic and Sersi may be the one to gift it to Dane. While this film is set to be an origin story for nine new extraterrestrial heroes, a new Earth-based hero may also rise.

2 Why Haven't They Been Involved In Major Events Thus Far?

The latest trailer reveals that the Eternals have been living on Earth basically since the dawn of humanity, which raises the question of why hasn't this cosmic superhero team shown up before now? Well, the latest trailer provided an explanation for that too as the narration indicates that they have chosen not to get involved in the matters of mortals, until now of course.

Whether or not this was their choice or a decree given to them by their Celestial overlords, it's enough of a reason to explain their absence. However, after everything MCU fans have seen to date, they're curious to know what's causing the Eternals to spring into action for the very first time after sidestepping threats like Dormammu, Ego, and Thanos.

1 What Is The Focus Of The Film?

The hype for The Eternals has grown exponentially, though not much is actually known about the plot or conflict. What fans do know is that the nine-member team arrives on Earth ages ago and proceeds to live their lives, blending into normal society.

Eventually, the most ancient foes of the Eternals arrive on Earth causing them to band together and stop the looming Deviant threat. Beyond that, fans should expect to see a lot of character development and historical background, for not only the new heroes but also to potentially tie into existing films.
