The Department of Damage Control will reportedly play a major role in Marvel Studios' Armor Wars.

The department has made numerous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most recently appearing in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. According to The Cosmic Circus, the superhero clean-up crew is rumored to play a much more significant role in the upcoming film Armor Wars than they have in previous MCU appearances.

Whether Damage Control will be the antagonist of Armor Wars is unknown as its role in the film has yet to be officially confirmed by Marvel or Disney. While little is known about the plot of Armor Wars, the movie will reportedly explore the ramifications of Tony Stark's technology falling into the wrong hands.

Created by Dwayne McDuffie and Ernie Colón, Damage Control first appeared in Marvel Comics with Marvel Age Annual #4 in 1988. Damage Control has long been a part of the fabric of the MCU's network of agencies and organizations dedicated to keeping its increasingly complex world safe. Technically a part of S.H.I.E.L.D., Damage Control was formed to handle the aftermath of superhuman conflicts. While first mentioned in 2008's Iron Man, the department first appeared in the MCU in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming and returned for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. It is set to show up again in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Though originally announced as a Disney+ series, it was revealed that Armor Wars would instead release as a theatrical film starring Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes, aka. War Machine, played by Don Cheadle. In a recent interview, Marvel Studios executive Nate Moore explained why the decision was made to turn Armor Wars into a movie instead of a television show.

"There were some great ideas that were coming out for that show, but that, to be quite honest, felt too big for that show," he said and added that budget also was a factor in the decision. "Our Disney+ shows are awesome, and we love them, but the budgets are not the same as the features, that's not secret. And when you're talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors, and Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors, and the legacy of Tony Stark, that became cost-prohibitive to do as a show."

While little is known in regard to plot details, Cheadle has previously teased that Armor Wars should be considered a "rebirth" for his MCU character. "It's coming back to this character, but we've never gone to the places we're about to go in the show, so I feel like in some ways we're just getting to know him even after all this time," he said.

Armor Wars doesn't yet have a release date.
