While there are many powerful and unique weapons scattered throughout the MCU, Thor's arsenal is typically the cream of the crop. His weapons are ancient and magical alien artifacts made from incredibly rare and strong metals. Both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker were crafted by the Dwarves of Nidavellir, but Mjolnir was enchanted by Odin and Stormbreaker channels the power of the Bifrost.
While Mjolnir required the user to be worthy, Stormbreaker simply requires someone who isn't a mortal to wield it. Despite the prestige required to use such weapons, there are a handful of characters throughout the MCU that held one of these instruments of death, and some have even successfully wielded them.
9 The God Of Thunder, Thor Odinson, Has Wielded Both Mjolnir & Stormbreaker
Being the rightful owner of both weapons, it's no surprise that Thor has wielded both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker on many occasions.
After his sister destroyed his beloved hammer, he eventually sought out a new weapon, an axe capable of channeling the Bifrost and killing the Mad Titan. The mighty Stormbreaker is Thor's current MCU weapon, but given the rate at which his character has developed lately, he may end up with a new weapon (and waistline) by the end of Thor 4.
8 Thor's Father & King of Asgard, Odin Borson, Enchanted Mjolnir To Teach Thor A Lesson
Odin passed away before the creation of Stormbreaker, but had Mjolnir hanging around the royal palace presumably for thousands of years. Most would assume Odin had picked up the hammer from time to time over the centuries, but fans have only seen it once on screen.
After banishing Thor to Midgard so he could learn a lesson in humility, Odin enchanted Mjolnir to prevent any average person from wielding the mighty Asgardian weapon. Eventually, Thor learned the lesson his father intended and fully regained control over Mjolnir.
7 The Last Of The Kursed Deflects Mjolnir, Which Is Impressive
While Kurse never actually held Mjolnir, the fact that he was able to deflect it in mid-air is an incredible feat of strength. However, it's still unclear how an unworthy creature like Kurse was able to affect the trajectory of Mjolnir in any capacity.
How Kurse was able to do such a thing may end up being one of those MCU details that never truly gets explained. However, with Mjolnir making a return in 2022, fans may get an explanation after all.
6 The Vision Hands Mjolnir To Thor (& Uses It To Hammer Ultron)
While many of the heroes didn't quite agree with the creation of the Vision, he was ultimately the deciding factor in the battle between Ultron and the Avengers. With many of the Avengers still unsure whether or not they could trust Vision, he proved his worth by simply lifting Mjolnir.
Each and every one of the Avengers, except Captain America, failed to move the hammer. When Vision effortlessly lifted the hammer and passed it to Thor, he basically confirmed that he was on the Avengers' side and was a trustworthy ally in the fight against Ultron.
5 The Goddess Of Death, Hela Odinsdottir, Wielded Mjolnir Hundreds Of Years Before Thor Was Born
While Thor had presumably wielded Mjolnir for centuries before learning about his sister, there is no telling how long Hela wielded the hammer during her time as Odin's war dog. Aside from the murals painted on the royal ceilings of Asgard, fans never got to see Hela use the hammer in imperial times, though she did stop it dead in its tracks during Ragnarok.
Despite a long history with the weapon, she didn't waste any time destroying it when she realized it now belonged to another. She simply palms the hammer, and then crushes it with her bare hand before hunting her brothers through the Bifrost. Luckily, instead of dying, they both conveniently landed on Sakaar.
4 Steve Rogers Is Worthy Enough To Wield Mjolnir & Strong Enough To Handle Stormbreaker
While many fans, and Thor, suspected Captain America was worthy of picking up Mjolnir back in 2015, he didn't prove his worth until the final battle in Endgame. When Thanos had commandeered Stormbreaker from Thor, fans saw Mjolnir lift off the ground, presumably to fly to Thor's aid.
However, fans cheered when they saw Steve Rogers grab the handle of the mighty hammer, confirming the beliefs from years earlier. Steve expertly wielded Mjolnir throughout the fight, and even accidentally snagged Stormbreaker.
3 Adolescent Groot Was The First One To Hold Stormbreaker
While no one besides Thor has been able to truly wield the awesome might of Stormbreaker, Groot was the very first being to hold this weapon when one of his arms became the handle for the mighty axe. After Thor almost sacrificed his life to melt the metal, Eitri desperately ran around, looking for the handle that should have been located before the forging started.
After looking up from his gaming device, Groot realized the gravity of the situation and jumped into action to help the God of Thunder. He snatched up the two pieces of the axe and held them together as the heat burned his wooden extremity. Satisfied with the handle, he cut his own arm off, allowing Thor to heal using the power of the axe.
2 Thanos Manages To Use Stormbreaker Against Thor
Unfortunately, Odin was unable to enchant Stormbreaker, which means that any being strong enough is capable of wielding the mighty axe. During the final battle in Endgame, Thanos managed to get a hand on Stormbreaker and use it against Thor.
With the blade of Stormbreaker slowly carving into his chest armor, all hope looked lost for Thor until Captain America stepped in with Mjolnir. Thanos didn't get another chance with Stormbreaker, but one chance was too close for comfort.
1 Jane Foster AKA Mighty Thor Will Be Wielding Mjolnir In Thor 4
While this wielder has yet to take up the mighty hammer, Jane Foster is slated to wield Mjolnir in the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder. Thanks to the recently leaked crew t-shirts, some eagle-eyed fans noticed that Mjolnir appears to have cracks in it, suggesting it may be reformed for Ms. Foster.
After a poor reception from fans and an eight-year hiatus from the MCU, Portman has a lot to prove in her upcoming role as the new Goddess of Thunder. It's unclear how much the comic storyline will influence the film, but with Taika Waititi at the helm once more, fans are simply excited to see the next adventure for Thor and friends.
