Not every character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe deserves the huge platform the MCU gives them. Many of these characters have seen their popularity grow during their time on screens, while others have seen it dwindle.

While it is common for viewers to be drawn to villainous characters, as they usually have depth and interesting backstories, fans also gravitate towards anti-heroes, heroes whose flaws break the archetypal hero's mold. However, it could be argued that the actions of the MCU's antiheroes toe the line between forgivable and irredeemable, and as such, many of them do not deserve the hype and popularity that they've received.

7 Druig Uses Mind Control To His Advantage

Barry Keoghan as Druig in Eternals

Chloe Zhao's 2021 movie The Eternals features an ensemble of millennia-old immortal heroes who are sent to Earth to protect it from a race of aliens known as Deviants. The Eternals live apart from each other for hundreds of years, with the aloof Druig choosing to settle down in Peru.

In the name of protecting his neighbors on the compound, Druig mind controlled the residents, enabling them to live peacefully and without conflict. However, in doing so, he completely took away their free will. Many fans ignore this due to his endearing relationship with fellow Eternal Makkari and his charmingly flirtatious, sarcastic attitude.

6 Wanda Maximoff Has A Lot To Apologize For

Wanda confronts Agatha

Wanda Maximoff has an extremely harrowing backstory. From the destruction of her country and her parents' death to being experimented on by HYDRA to the loss of Vision, fans have seen Wanda go through trauma after trauma.

However, the events of WandaVision saw Wanda create her own reality, trapping the residents of Westview within it. Wanda eventually sets everyone free but loses everything in the process. Going into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda's popularity as a character seems to have clouded fans' judgments when it comes to all the wrong she has done and is likely to do in the future.

5 Doctor Strange Is Reckless With Magic

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home

When the title character in Marvel's Doctor Strange is introduced, he is a talented neurosurgeon who, after an unnecessary car crash, is forced out of his career in medicine and discovers magic. He is extremely powerful but is reckless and arrogant, and Strange pushes the limits of his power, no matter the consequences.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Strange quickly agrees to alter the minds of the entire human race to make them forget that Peter is Spider-Man and then pushes the blame onto Peter when the spell cracks open the multiverse. Fans appear excited for his return in Multiverse of Madness even though Strange will have to pull off miracles to even begin to redeem his character.

4 Groot Is Adorable But Unhelpful

Groot glares

This may be controversial, as Groot is extremely popular with MCU fans, with many sporting t-shirts, keychains, and other merchandise with his face plastered on them, but his presence adds little to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Groot is wholesome and adorable, and the way he chimes in with "I am Groot" is endearing.

However, in movies that already rely so much on music and moments of comedy, Groot's moments take up valuable screen time that could be used to further the narrative.

3 Peter Quill Is The Least Interesting Guardian

StarLord Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy's protagonist Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, has become popular with fans as his movies have done the same. However, the other Guardians and the movies' supporting characters are more interesting, well-rounded characters who do not get appreciated enough.

Not only is Quill annoying and childish, but he is also reckless when fighting, to the detriment of his allies. Quill's interference in The Avengers' plan in Infinity War lost them the Infinity Gauntlet. In some ways, he is responsible for the Snap.

2 Tony Stark Is Arrogant And Entitled

Tony spreads his arms

In the MCU's debut, Iron Man, Tony Stark is introduced as an arrogant, billionaire playboy, and he stays in that mode for most of his on-screen journey. From sexism to transphobic comments to joking about reinstituting prima nocta, Tony has a lot of unlikeable qualities.

However, Stark saved the world in Endgame and was killed in the process. While he made the ultimate sacrifice, he was still responsible for many deaths and put so many people in danger during his life.

1 Loki Has Never Redeemed Himself

Fans of the MCU were introduced to Loki as Thor's conniving and murderous brother and while the character has become so much more across the movies and his own TV series, he still hasn't done anything to justify the love people feel for him.

Along with teaming up with Thanos, Loki has caused massive harm to the multiverse and done his best to escape punishment for his actions every step of the way. At no point has the adopted son of Odin worked to really redeem himself in the eyes of others.
