The Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven to be a juggernaut in the entertainment industry, bringing Marvel's superheroes to a wider audience than they've ever had before. The movies of the MCU have thrilled audiences, sometimes even improving on their source material.  Film has proven to be a fertile ground for superheroes, with its big budgets, state-of-the-art special effects, and A-list stars.

However, the success of WandaVision on Disney+ (as well as the shutting of theaters because of COVID) has opened up a whole new ground for the MCU. The episodic format proved perfect for WandaVision, engaging fans in a way that movies can't. With more shows coming down the pipe, it's looking like Disney+ may be the new home of the MCU, for better and for worse.

10 Better On Disney+: Different Types Of Superhero Stories

WandaVision finale

WandaVision was a departure for the MCU in a lot of ways. The movies of the MCU are quite formulaic, often eschewing nuance and emotional complexity for bombast and spectacle. WandaVision was the opposite of that- it embraced nuance and emotional complexity, pulling on viewers' heartstrings with a story that was about dealing with grief.

A movie has to make back its budget, so they appeal to the widest audience possible. This limits the stories that can be told because they have to appeal to the lowest common denominator. With Disney+ shows, things can get more nuanced and specialized.

9 Better In Theaters: The A-List Talent

The New Avengers Were Divided In Civil War

While a lot of shows have been announced for Disney+, most of them have been the ones starring the B-list Avengers. While the actors who play these characters are great, stars like Scarlet Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Pratt, and Chris Hemsworth are all still movie exclusive. There are many factors in this, but regardless, it's an important distinction.

The A-list talent of the MCU has been its biggest weapon. These talents set the movies apart from just about anything in theaters, with their acting chops really selling the material, making it hit that much harder. Film gets the big names.

8 Better On Disney+: The Stories Can Be More Comic Book Accurate

There's a fallacy (mostly among people who don't know about comics) that the movies of the MCU are comic accurate. While the costumes have been pretty faithful, the stories are not comic accurate, nor are many of the characters. A lot of this has to do with the length of movies- there's only so much that can be fit in a two to three-hour movie.

A show on Disney+ doesn't have this problem- the shows have more time to tell their stories and this will allow them to explore the nuances of stories and will make things more comic accurate.

7 Better In Theaters: The Theatre Format Makes For A Better Viewing Experience When It Comes To MCU Films

Wakanda in the MCU

While TVs and home sound systems have progressed a lot, only the very rich can afford anything that gets close to the theater experience. A theater's sound system is very hard to replicate at home and it's impossible to have a screen as big as the one in a theater. Superheroes have been on TV for years but it's hard to argue with how great their adventures look on the big screen.

Re-watching MCU movies at home is great, but nothing compares to seeing them on the big screen. The amazing fight scenes hit differently when seen larger than life with bone-rattling surround sound and losing that completely would be a tragedy.

6 Better On Disney+: More MCU To Enjoy

WandaVision ran for nine episodes and it stands to reason that the other Disney+ MCU shows will have a similar length. While naysayers have been predicting superhero fatigue for years now, the MCU has defied every negative prediction; in fact, people seemingly want more MCU, with three movies a year coming out before the closing of theaters.

Disney+ is the perfect home for it in that regard. With the MCU in theaters, fans only get nine to ten hours of MCU a year. WandaVision has already given fans that, with Falcon And Winter Soldier and Loki promising similar amounts. This gives fans more to enjoy, whetting their appetite in a way that keeping the MCU in theaters can't.

5 Better In Theaters: It Allows Anticipation To Build

While more MCU seems like a good thing, it can also water things down. One of the biggest triumphs of the MCU has been the way it built anticipation. The time between movies gave fans time to come up with elaborate theories and built anticipation to a fever pitch.

With MCU media being released more frequently, it takes away that kind of anticipation. Instant gratification kicks in and it becomes less special, just a normal part of life. The event feel of the MCU will disappear and this can be a very bad thing; fans may start to take the whole thing for granted.

4 Better On Disney+: Better Stories Can Be Adapted

The Marvel Universe has proven to be one of the most fertile fictional universes ever created; they don't call it the House Of Ideas for nothing. The MCU has done its best in giving wider audiences a taste of that universe but they've been constrained by the medium of film and a need to appeal to as many fans as possible to make a profit.

On Disney+, subscribers pay regardless of whether they watch something or not. This will allow the MCU to branch out to the really obscure and dark Marvel stories, giving viewers stories like they've never experienced before and taking the MCU in directions that would be impossible if it stayed in the theaters.

3 Better In Theaters: A Wider Audience Can Be Reached

Thanos leading the charge in Endgame

Disney+ has approximately ninety million subscribers. This is a drop in bucket when taking into account the size of the Earth's population. The MCU's films are blockbusters in just about every market and relegating them completely to Disney+ would cut the audience numbers down significantly.

On top of that, many people don't have the time to devote to multiple series' but can go to a movie theater every couple of months. While the most rabid MCU fans will definitely watch the Disney+ shows, the more casual audience won't and this will hurt viewership of the property as a whole.

2 Better On Disney+: Superheroes Work Better In A More Serialized Format

wandavision

Superheroes were born on the newsstands, with their adventures coming out every month. This type of serialized storytelling allowed for characters to grow and change over the years, while also allowing fans to really get involved in the lives of their favorites. While the MCU has done a good job with the serialized format, the time between releases meant that fans didn't get to spend as much time with the characters.

A TV show is much closer to a comic than a movie is- it comes out more frequently and can be better used for long-form storytelling. Superheroes have always felt more at home when presented this way and Disney+ shows allow for serialized storytelling better than movies.

1 Better In Movies: The Spectacle Is Better Suited For The Big Screen

Avengers-Assemble mcu

While special effects technology has grown to such an extent that even TV budgets can present great special effects, they still can't match movies for sheer spectacle. The best effects are still found in film, likewise with the best stunt coordinators. The spectacle that the medium of film allows has played a huge part in the success of the MCU and taking it away from theaters means losing a lot of that.

The last episode of WandaVision had some cool action, but it wasn't of the caliber of some of the end battles of MCU films and the preceding episodes were pretty sparse on action and special effects. Relegating the MCU to Disney+ would take away a lot of the spectacle that made it what it is and the product will suffer.
