Avengers: Infinity War is many things, and packed of information is one of them. With its willingness to buck the trends of the MCU, the movie had so many moving parts and all sorts of details that are guaranteed to change the universe going forward. What has people chomping at the bit is that Infinity War is essentially the first part of a two-part story. Because of this, there were many things left unanswered at the end of the film. Moving into Avengers: Endgame, there are so many questions whose answers aren't far beyond conjecture at this point. Characters like Rocket, Hulk, and Gamora have details that need clarification. Likewise, there are plot elements from the last film that need to be addressed, including how Earth's Mightiest Heroes are going to save the day above all else. Needless to say, Marvel has plenty of things to delve into when the movie finally releases.
However, with so many things to do, there's no doubt that Avengers: Endgame can't possibly answer every question posed by Avengers: Infinity War. It has to introduce some characters to the lineup while being a sequel to Infinity War and still setting up new ground for a soft reboot of the MCU going forward. It's a daunting task, and we're guaranteed that some questions will be left to our imaginations for years to come.
As we wait for the inevitable Avengers: Endgame trailer, here are 10 burning MCU questions that the movie needs to answer and 10 we already know it won't.
20 NEEDS TO ANSWER - WHERE DID HALF THE UNIVERSE GO?
The biggest moment in Avengers: Infinity War came at the end. Despite their best efforts, Earth's Mightiest Heroes were not strong enough to stop Thanos from gathering all the Infinity Stones. Even with Thor's new Stormbreaker Ax in his chest, Thanos still managed to snap his fingers and wipe half the universe from existence. The biggest question we have after that is, "where did they all go?" Some have speculated that everyone who turned to dust disappeared into the Soul Stone, as a child Gamora was pictured there, but she was the sacrifice for that stone. Furthermore, are the dust characters actually gone or temporarily somewhere else?
19 WON'T ANSWER - WHO RULES WAKANDA?
Despite being one of their biggest characters to date, Black Panther wasn't saved from Thanos' wrath. Among many other newer Avengers, T'Challa also disappeared after the snap. With the King of Wakanda gone, it makes us wonder who will rule the kingdom in his stead? Could it be Shuri due to the royal bloodline? Perhaps M'Baku will take over for the time being? Whatever the case, we doubt it will be answered in Avengers: Endgame. The film will be following the action and we doubt that Wakanda will play any major role in the film. Most people are concerned with the heroes fighting Thanos anyway.
18 NEEDS TO ANSWER - WHERE IS HAWKEYE?
Two big Avengers didn't show up for Infinity War: Ant-Man and Hawkeye. While a throwaway line suggests Hawkeye's whereabouts (pointing to him taking a deal just to be with his family), that doesn't quite cut it. Ant-Man and the Wasp followed Scott's adventures during Infinity War, but without any movie to back him up, we've been left in the dark about Hawkeye. The Avengers: Endgame trailer showed Hawkeye in what looks to be in Japan wielding a sword instead of a bow. However, it doesn't tell us what he was doing the whole time or why he is there at all.
17 WON'T ANSWER - ARE THERE ANY ASGARDIANS LEFT?
The Asgardians have had it rough the past few years. After losing their entire army and home in Thor: Ragnarok, the remaining refugees were seemingly taken out by Thanos. After losing his brother and best friend, Thor was left to suffer by the Mad Titan. He survived the attack, though, but the rest of the Asgardians were nowhere to be found. With Valkyrie and Korg not appearing in the film, it makes us wonder if there are any Asgardians left. Thor directly references that "half" of his people were destroyed, so it's possible that some could've survived. Will that be an important moment in Avengers: Endgame, though? We strongly doubt it.
16 NEEDS TO ANSWER - HOW DOES STARK GET OFF OF TITAN?
Of all the characters depressed at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, none seemed to have it worse than Tony Stark. After watching his protege taken away by the snap, he was stranded on Titan with only Nebula to keep him company. The Mad Titan having won, it seems that there's no hope for Tony and that his worst fears had come true. The Avengers: Endgame trailer opens with Stark on what looks to be a ship from the Guardians of the Galaxy. With diminishing resources, he's been adrift for some time. With no hope of escaping, we're curious to know how he'll get back to Earth. Nebula seems to have left him as well.
15 WON'T ANSWER - IS LOKI GONE FOR REAL?
Avengers: Infinity War opened with the loss of Loki, which shocked many people. Despite Thanos' "No resurrections this time" line, some have theorized that the entire thing is misdirection and that the God of Mischief is still alive somehow. People looking for confirmation of Loki's passing in Avengers: Endgame probably won't find it though. The Russos are insistent on the fact that Loki is not coming back and, the way the scene was handled in the film, we're inclined to believe the same. Loki will likely have an appearance as one of his past versions, but the character is gone in the present.
14 NEEDS TO ANSWER - WHY DIDN'T CAPTAIN MARVEL DISAPPEAR?
During the post-credit scene for Infinity War, we see Nick Fury watch as people around him are disappearing. Knowing that he is next on the list, he quickly pulls out a pager to call Captain Marvel for help before disappearing himself. However, how is he certain that Captain Marvel wasn't affected by the problem as well? Because she is appearing in Avengers: Endgame in a seemingly big way, is there a reason that she survived the snap or was she just one of the lucky ones? Whatever the answer, it's critical that Avengers: Endgame answer it as she wasn't included in Infinity War during that moment.
13 WON'T ANSWER - WHICH SUPPORTING CHARACTERS SURVIVED?
Fans of the MCU had to watch as many of their favorite characters disappeared thanks to Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet. Apart from the heroes of the MCU, we didn't get any details about the other characters in the MCU. What happened to Aunt May, Happy Hogan, or even Helen Cho? Whatever the answer, it's likely that it won't be in Avengers: Endgame. The movie won't have time to explore all the random side characters of each franchise, as it'll be more focused on the central conflict. There are already plenty of characters to juggle, so the film will need to focus on them and not make things more complicated.
12 NEEDS TO ANSWER - WHY DOES THE QUANTUM REALM PROTECT PEOPLE?
At the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott Lang takes a journey into the Quantum Realm only to be stranded there. He seemed to be in the right place at the right time, as Hope, Janet, and Hank were all turned to dust. It seems that the Quantum Realm saved him, but why was that the case? After all, the Quantum Realm is merely a microscopic world, but it exists in reality. Avengers: Endgame needs to explain why or how the Quantum Realm protects people that are in it because suspension of disbelief probably won't work if Marvel tries to test it in that way. Scott Lang does seem to give hope to Captain America, so we're all but certain that the Quantum Realm plays a big part.
11 WON'T ANSWER- WHAT WERE THE DEFENDERS UP TO?
There's a joke in here somewhere about Thanos' snap and the cancellation of three of the Marvel Netflix shows. Regardless, with the way the Netflix shows have only mildly referenced the MCU, we would be shocked if we got any explanation as to what happened to them, especially during Avengers: Endgame. Daredevil, Luke Cage, and the rest of those characters have not made any sort of impact on the movies. While it's possible that Daredevil could be making the jump to the big screen at some point, it won't be during Avengers: Endgame. We likely won't even know if the Defenders survived the snap.
10 NEEDS TO ANSWER - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE INFINITY STONES?
While Infinity War was the first Marvel movie to bring all of the Infinity Stones together, it also did some damage to them in the process. After Thanos snapped his fingers, there is a shot of the Gauntlet destroyed before Thanos disappears to a different planet. The last shot shows the Mad Titan smiling into the sunset, but there's no Gauntlet or Stones in sight. What we want to know is what happened to the Infinity Stones. Were they destroyed? Is the Mad Titan holding on to them? Whatever the case, it's likely that they'll be an integral part of Avengers: Endgame. We see Thanos wielding the Gauntlet in the trailer, so who knows what that means for the Stones?
9 WON'T ANSWER - DOES XANDAR HAVE SURVIVORS?
The moment the Power Stone was locked away on Xandar, fans knew that it was only a matter of time before the Mad Titan arrived and wiped everyone out. Some thought Infinity War would open with the destruction of Xandar, but that wasn't the case. Thanos began the film already having the Power Stone and Thor confirmed later that he had already decimated Xandar. With so little attention given to the planet, we imagine that we won't get any time spent on Xandar in Avengers: Endgame either. If Nova is created out of Thanos destroying Xandar, that will probably be a point the MCU addresses in a later film.
8 NEEDS TO ANSWER - HOW LONG IS THE GAP?
With a full year between the release of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, there are all sorts of theories as to when the latter will take place. Some believe that the movie will pick up right where Infinity War left off, showcasing the Avengers springing into action and trying to save the universe. Some theories suggest that there will be a gap of a few years between the two films, showing how the Avengers reeled from the damage that Thanos caused. The trailer shows a shaven Captain America and the rest of the Avengers broken, so it's probably safe to assume that it's been at least a few months.
7 WON'T ANSWER - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE COLLECTOR?
After first appearing in a post-credit scene for Thor: The Dark World as well as a side character in Guardians of the Galaxy, the Collector didn't appear again until Avengers: Infinity War. We see Thanos interrogating him about the location of the Reality Stone. The Guardians rush in and seemingly save him, but it was all a trick by the Mad Titan. When a burning Knowhere is shown to the team, there is no Collector in sight. The movie doesn't explain what happened to him, though it's assumed that he lost his life. Whatever the case, Avengers: Endgame won't take the time to answer it, as it has much more important things on its mind.
6 NEEDS TO ANSWER - DOES ROCKET JOIN THE AVENGERS?
After the snap, Rocket was the only member of the Guardians of the Galaxy left. Having gone on a journey with Thor, his whole world was changed forever when Thanos won and he witnessed the loss of Groot. Moving forward, we wonder how Rocket is going to cope with this loss. Will he compensate by forming his own version of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Perhaps he will join the Avengers instead? With no other superhero teams in the MCU at the moment, our money is on Rocket joining Earth's Mightiest Heroes. That said, he wasn't seen anywhere in the trailer, so his whereabouts are up in the air.
5 WON'T ANSWER - HOW IS THE BIFROST SUMMONED?
One of the most triumphant moments in Avengers: Infinity War was when Thor finally had his new weapon and used the Bifrost to send him, Rocket, and Groot to Wakanda. However, with the ax summoning the Bifrost, it does present a problem. The Bifrost was destroyed along with Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. How can Thor summon a bridge that no longer exists? With the movie using Thor's powers as an epic moment, it never had any interest in explaining them. We imagine the same will be true for Avengers: Endgame. We're just supposed to accept that Thor can now summon the Bifrost.
4 NEEDS TO ANSWER - WHY DID DOCTOR STRANGE SURRENDER THE TIME STONE?
When Stark, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man were headed to Titan, Strange told Stark that he would gladly defend the Time Stone over them. With his lack of interest in the other heroes, it seemed that Strange was going to remain a valiant protector of the Stone. However, when Stark's life was threatened by Thanos, Strange willingly handed over the Time Stone. Before disappearing, Strange said that it was the "only way." People have scrutinized this line above all the rest in the film, so Avengers: Endgame needs to give answers. Why did Doctor Strange suddenly go against his word?
3 WON'T ANSWER - HOW DOES THE WORLD RESPOND TO THE SNAP?
The MCU is largely concerned with its heroes and the action that surrounds them. It doesn't spend much time dealing with how other people are dealing with its events. We didn't see regular people affected by the snap until the post-credit scene in Infinity War. With the world seemingly in disarray, there seems to be a lot going on. Not only will the Avengers need to regroup, but so will the rest of the world. That said, Avengers: Endgame will most likely deal with Earth's Mightiest Heroes and not give much, if any, time to average people. The MCU likes to cut to the chase.
2 NEEDS TO ANSWER - IS THERE A BIGGER THREAT?
One of the more interesting rumors for Avengers: Endgame is that there is a threat bigger than Thanos on its way. This came from a description on a toy for the upcoming film, so we're not sure how true it holds. That said, it does provide a lot of interesting discussion. After Thanos wrecked the entire universe, the possibility of another villain being a bigger threat than him could make for an exciting (or underwhelming) climax. If there were another villain rising, it would have to be as a direct result of the Mad Titan's actions. Either way, we need an answer to the "bigger threat" question.
1 WON'T ANSWER - DOES THE SNAP CREATE THE X-MEN?
With the X-Men on their way to the MCU, Marvel needs to find a way to properly explain why they've been absent from all the previous movies. Some have speculated that Avengers: Endgame is the perfect time to do it, as the world-altering events could bring rise to some sort of mutant gene that manifests itself in the form of the X-Men. However, the X-Men's arrival is far off, as Marvel doesn't have any immediate plans to bring them over. Furthermore, with Dark Phoenix and New Mutants still tracking for a 2019 release, it's going to be a few years before we see Charles Xavier in the same room as Doctor Strange.
