Because of Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, it's only a matter of time before the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU is responsible for some of the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time and the X-Men would only add to that. There are almost sixty years worth of X-Men stories to choose from but unfortunately, some of the best have been adapted already, as was the case with X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Considered one of the best X-Men movies of the Fox years, it stands to reason that the MCU should not adapt that story. Or does it? There are plenty of pros and cons to giving fans an MCU version of the classic story.

10 Should Try To Adapt It Again: It Can Fix The Screwy Time Travel Rules Of The MCU

Time travel GPS Endgame

Let's be real for a second, the time travel rules in the MCU are terrible. In fact, if one is being realistic about them, the whole reason they exist the way they do is so the Avengers couldn't just use time travel to undo the Snap, padding the runtime of Endgame. Adapting Days of Future Past again will give them a chance to fix things.

It's one of the best alternate universe stories ever and using it to fix the MCU's dodgy time travel rules would serve a double purpose—not only giving fans a good story but also making the MCU better in the future.

9 Shouldn't Try To Adapt It: The Beginning Sequence Is Way Too Dark For The MCU

One of fans' favorite parts of this classic X-Men story is the sequence set in the future. Seeing the X-Men battle against the oppressive Sentinels in a blasted dystopian future was amazing and it set the standard for every future set X-Men story ever. It also set a precedent for dark futures for the team and would be too dark for the MCU.

While one can argue that after Infinity War there's nothing too dark for the MCU, it's very different—the Snap turned people to dust; the Sentinels slaughter them brutally. On top of that, the whole future is dependent on racism winning, which clashes with the simplistic, hopeful MCU fare.

8 Should Try To Adapt It: They Can Make It The Kitty Pryde-Centric Story It's Meant To Be

Kitty Pryde in Days of Future Past

One of the problems with Fox's X-Men movies is that they crammed Wolverine into everything, even when he didn't need to be there. X-Men: Days of Future Past is a perfect example of this. In the comic, Kitty Pryde was the one who went back in time to warn the X-Men about the assassination, not Wolverine.

If Marvel Studios does adapt the movie, they can fix this mistake. Sure, everyone loves Wolverine but other X-Men need to get spotlighted as well. Kitty Pryde is one of the best X-Men and giving her this story as a movie, as the comic did, would be great.

7 Shouldn't Try To Adapt It: It's One Of The Most Well-Regarded Fox X-Men Films

X-Men Days Of Future Past Cropped

The Fox X-Men films started off well but there were a lot of missteps. X-Men: Days of Future Past was not one of those missteps; it's very well regarded not only among the X-Men movies but also superhero movies in general. Fans love everything about it—the acting, the dialogue, the special effects, and the story.

As good as MCU movies can be, X-Men: Days of Future Past casts a long shadow, making it a hard sell as far as a remake goes. While the film industry is partly a remake factory, remaking this one may be hard because of its quality.

6 Should Try To Adapt It: It Doesn't Have To Be Married To The X-Men: First Class Timeline

Magneto in Days of Future Past

While X-Men: First Class was one of the movies that changed the perception of X-Men movies by the general public after some pretty notorious duds, the fact that X-Men: Days of Future Past had to work with the First Class timeline pigeonholed the story a bit and changed some fundamental things about it.

For example, the movie had to use the younger versions of Magneto and Xavier, which the MCU might not go with. It used the adamantium-less Wolverine and there was no actual X-Men team in the sections in the movie's present. If the MCU did it, they wouldn't have to follow these arbitrary rules.

5 Shouldn't Try To Adapt It: It's Actually Aged Very Well

Charles Dejected Days Of Future Past

For someone who has never watched a Fox X-Men movie but just heard the online discourse about them, they'd believe that all of them were terrible movies that can't compare to anything the MCU put out and the X-Men are better off without Marvel Studios. While there are some very bad Fox X-Men movies, some of them are quite good and have aged pretty well.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is one of those. While it might not be super comic accurate, most of the MCU isn't either, and it's a pretty great movie. The special effects still look amazing and there's very little that could be improved with a remake.

4 Should Try To Adapt It: So Marvel Studios Can Put Their Own Stamp On It

Marvel-Studios-10-Years-Book-Cover

Looking at the Fox X-Men movies, there are some stories that were adapted and it was a huge mistake, like The Dark Phoenix Saga. Days of Future Past isn't one of those stories; it's a story that the Fox movies did very well and in a lot of ways, it's "theirs," for lack of a better word. If there's one thing that Marvel Studios needs to do with the X-Men, it's to take them back completely.

That makes putting their own spin on the story a priority. By taking one of the best Fox X-Men movies and making a superior version, they can put their own stamp on it and make it their own, hopefully driving the Fox version away from the public's minds.

3 Shouldn't Try To Adapt It: It Won't Have The Stellar Cast

Days Of Future Past

While the MCU has done a great job with casting, it's hard to top the murderer's row of talent that X-Men: Days of Future Past had. Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellan, and Halle Berry are all amazing, well-known actors and they brought something special to the movie and that's not even bringing Peter Dinklage and the others into the mix.

With a cast like that, it's hard to imagine an MCU version that can even match it. The cast made the movie work so well and while it's certain the MCU cast will be pretty good, they can't match what came before.

2 Should Try To Adapt It: It's A Classic

Wolverine Protecting Kitty Pryde

There are some X-Men stories that every fan knows and loves. These are the formative stories, the ones that are part of what made the X-Men such a massive name in comics. Days of Future Past is one of those stories, from the time writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne were at the height of their powers.

It just about has to be adapted by Marvel Studios if they're doing the X-Men. It's a classic and one of the most important X-Men stories; not adapting it would be a grave mistake for the studio.

1 Shouldn't Try To Adapt It: There Are Better Choices For The MCU To Adapt

Magneto War, Operation Zero Tolerance, Astonishing X-Men

The X-Men have been around for almost sixty years, as long as the Avengers, and in those six decades, there have been some amazing stories. While Days of Future Past is certainly one of them, there are literally thousands more, ones that would be completely new to movie audiences and deserve their chance in the limelight.

The X-Men's publication history is an embarrassment of riches and just adapting the same classic stories, even if they are among the best of all time like Days of Future Past, is taking a spot away from another story that deserves a chance to shine. The MCU era will be a new time for the X-Men and it's best to embrace the future.
