Todd McFarlane's live-action film adaptation of his famous character Spawn has been in the works for several years, but the script hasn't sold, which the comic creator recently blamed on his own writing.

"I wrote the first draft of the screenplay," McFarlane told Forbes in a recent interview. "If I'd done my job and written a screenplay that mattered, that would have sold it. I'm culpable on that end to start with."

McFarlane also acknowledged the financiers' possible anxiety for backing a new film writer/director such as himself. "That's why I went to get Jason Blum to produce, and attached Jamie [Foxx ]and Jeremy [Renner] - to add the quality to it," he noted. "My goal is to continue to add those kind of quality people at all levels. The more I can add those people, the less I become relevant as a risk."

In 1997, Spawn received a live-action adaptation directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé and starring Michael Jai White as the titular hero. More recently, McFarlane began talking about writing and directing his own film based on the character with Foxx and Renner attached to star. Another famous actor may be joining the cast as well, according to McFarlane.

Currently, there is no information on official plot details or a release date for Spawn.
