When it was first announced that Joss Whedon was set to bring Phil Coulson back to life on the small screen following his death in 2012's The Avengers, fans questioned whether or not the Avengers would learn that he was still alive. Now, after five seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the third Avengers film on the horizon, it appears that lingering plot thread will finally be resolved.
Ahead of the 100th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which will air on ABC tonight, Coulson actor Clark Gregg, as well as Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the long lingering question -- will the Avengers ever find out about Coulson? After five seasons, Gregg was quick to note that, whenever the two worlds -- Marvel Television and Marvel Studios -- finally decide to connect, he's sure the heroes will learn Coulson's still alive. Until then, though, he's not concerned about it much anymore.
“When they feel like it’s time to start connecting any of these worlds, they will,” Gregg said. “I feel like I’ll hear from them then, but in the meantime, I have my hands full trying to do a good job on [S.H.I.E.L.D.]”
According to Loeb, however, the plot thread will finally be resolved soon. “It’s certainly something that will get resolved," he said. "And it may get resolved in a very surprising way,”
Given how jam-packed Avengers: Infinity War is, and Gregg's prior confirmation that he's not involved in the film, it remains unclear how Marvel plans to address the issue. Still, while Loeb's comments may bring about more questions than answers, it's nice to know that the matter will finally be addressed -- somewhere.
Airing Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Elizabeth Henstridge.
