Following news of the surprise departure of Frank Darabont as showrunner of The Walking Dead, Deadline confirms that Glen Mazzara will step in to take his place on the hit AMC drama.
A former executive producer of The Shield, Mazzara has been involved with the acclaimed horror series since 2010, writing the Season 1 episode “Wildfire.” He signed on as an executive producer and Darabont’s No. 2 in February, replacing Charles “Chic” Eglee, who left the series two months earlier to head up FX’s adaptation of Powers. Mazzara will remain an executive producer alongside Gale Anne Hurd and Robert Kirkman, co-creator of the comic on which the series is based.
Questions remain about the reasons for Darabont’s abrupt resignation and what role, if any, he will have on the project he spent five years shepherding to television. The Los Angeles Times contends he will, “at most,” serve as a consultant.
The shakeup reportedly hasn’t affected production of Season 2, which has been under way in Georgia for about seven weeks. The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Oct. 16.
