The third season of Mayans M.C. is officially done, with the FX series having wrapped with "Chapter the Last, Nothing More to Write." While the crime drama was renewed for a fourth season, Mayans M.C. won't return until 2022, which is quite a long ways away. However, there's a lot of great TV out there right now -- especially when you love charming and compelling criminals.
With that in mind, here are six series that fans of Mayans M.C. are sure to love.
Sons of Anarchy
If you're a fan of Mayans M.C. and you haven't seen Sons of Anarchy, there's no better time to watch the franchise's original series than now. And if you've seen it before, well, it's no less deserving of a rewatch. Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy ran from 2008 until 2014 on FX. The series, which was set in Charming, California, followed the members of SAMCRO. Featuring many structural and thematic similarities to William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Sons of Anarchy focuses on Jackson "Jax" Teller as he tries to hold his club together while also learning the truth about the death of his father, SAMCRO founder John Teller.
While not all of Sons of Anarchy is perfect, the show features some incredibly compelling characters and plotlines. There's a lot of interesting outlaw biker intrigue, and Sons of Anarchy remains a genuinely hard series to put down. Plus, Mayan M.C., which is set after Sons of Anarchy, has also featured some pretty important characters from the original series, so it's necessary from a completionist standpoint.
Justified
On the other side of the law but no less gritty is FX's Justified. Based on the work of Elmore Leonard, Justified was developed by Graham Yost and ran from 2010 until 2015. The award-winning series follows U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens after he's moved to eastern Kentucky following a questionable shooting. A native of Harlan County, Raylan is forced to confront both his past and the criminals destroying the place he once called home.
While a lot of Justified relies on serialized storytelling, the actual season-long arcs are fantastic and deal with a lot of similar themes to that of Mayans M.C., particularly redemption and anger. Justified is also more than just a cop show, spending a lot of time focusing on its criminal characters and their development as people.
Mr Inbetween
The last FX show on this list, Scott Ryan's Mr Inbetween, is somewhat different than Sons of Anarchy in that there's more of a focus on black comedy. The show follows a hitman named Ray Shoesmith who has to balance his criminal activities with everyday life, including raising his daughter Brittany. Thanks to his criminal activities, Ray often finds himself at odds with both the law and other criminals.
While Mr Inbetween is undoubtedly funny, the show has a lot of heart. It's a decidedly different experience from Mayans M.C., which is generally only funny incidentally, but the choice to humanize and explore its main protagonist in such a deep way will certainly make fans of EZ Reyes happy. The third and final season of Mr Inbetween is slated to premiere on May 25.
Peaky Blinders
Created by Steven Knight, BBC's Peaky Blinders has run since 2013 and will end with its upcoming sixth season. Set after World War I, the series follows Thomas Shelby as he leads the Peaky Blinders in Birmingham, England. Over the course of the show, the Peaky Blinders have had to contend with threats to their future, though there's a particular focus on the group's political enemies.
Thanks to its intrigue and strong characters, Peaky Blinders is a great choice for Mayans M.C. fans who've been particularly interested in the show's ongoing civil war. There's also a lot of grit in Peaky Blinders, which works well with the show's incredibly intelligent writing.
Narcos
Running from 2015 until 2017, Netflix's Narcos was created by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro. The first two seasons of Narcos focus on Pablo Escobar, one of Colombia's most notorious criminal kingpins, as he grows his criminal empire. Since the show's end in 2017, Netflix has launched Narcos: Mexico, which shifts the focus to the Guadalajara Cartel and its leader, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, as it becomes a terrifyingly powerful drug empire.
Narcos and Narcos: Mexico are sure to appeal to those who find themselves drawn to Mayans M.C.'s Galindo Cartel plot. Both are high-quality and acclaimed series that are sure to pique the interests of anyone interested in the seedy underworld of drug empires.
Godfather of Harlem
Written by Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, Epix's Godfather of Harlem has run since 2019 and is currently in the midst of its second season. The series, which is set in the '60s, sees gangster Bumpy Johnson -- played by Forest Whitaker -- getting out of prison and working to restore his criminal empire. Godfather of Harlem is based on real people.
Godfather of Harlem is one of the best crime dramas running today. Period. Fans of Mayans M.C. are sure to enjoy the well-written, well-acted TV series. And thematically, Godfather of Harlem is just as rich and deep, examining themes of power and change against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement.
Created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, Mayans M.C. stars J.D. Pardo as EZ Reyes, Clayton Cardenas as Angel Reyes, Sarah Bolger as Emily Galindo, Michael Irby as Obispo "Bishop" Losa, Carla Baratta as Luisa "Adelita" Espina, Richard Cabral as Johnny "Coco" Cruz, Raoul Trujillo as Che "Taza" Romero, Danny Pino as Miguel Galindo, Edward James Olmos as Felipe Reyes and Emilio Rivera as Marcus Álvarez. Season 3 is available now on Hulu. Season 4 will release in 2022.
