Max von Sydow Joins 'Game of Thrones' as Three-Eyed Raven

In the upcoming sixth season of "Game of Thrones," Max von Sydow will take over the role of the Three-Eyed Raven from Struan Rodger, who appeared as the character in the season four finale, Variety reports.

The Three-Eyed Raven plays an important role in Bran Stark's storyline by teaching him about his supernatural gifts, including warging, or the ability to transfer his consciousness into other animals. Though absent from season five, Bran will return in season six. According to the report, Von Sydow isn't expected to appear often but he will have a major role in the next season's events.

Though it’s not yet known when George R.R. Martin will finish his “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series, HBO’s massively successful “Game of Thrones” TV series, President of HBO Programming Michael Lombardo told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that, according to the show’s producers, an eight-season run is currently the rough plan, continuing the diverging paths between the show and its source material.

"Game of Thrones" season six is expected to debut in spring 2016.
