Monster High, Mattel's toy line turned animated multimedia franchise, is heading to the big screen as a live-action film.

Deadline reports Universal Pictures has tapped Ari Sandel, director of the short "West Bank Story" and the teen comedy "The Duff," to helm the adaptation. The website contends the feature "ties into Universal’s effort to defibrillate new life into its library of classic monsters."

Introduced in 2010, Monster High is a fashion doll franchise featuring the children of such famous monsters as Dracula, the Mummy, Frankenstein's Monster, the Werewolf and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. So you can see how the property might fit into Universal's larger plans for its Monster library.

In addition to webisodes, Monster High has inspired a series of animated TV specials, video games and young-adult novels.

The film's script was written by longtime collaborators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz ("The O.C.," "Gossip Girl").
