Mattel and MGM are teaming up to make a live-action movie based on the Polly Pocket toyline.

Lena Dunham will write and direct the film with Lily Collins (Emily in Paris) starring, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed. The movie will center on a young girl and pocket-sized woman who form a friendship.

A collection of miniature figures, including the Polly Pocket character, and houses, the Polly Pocket toys were first sold by Bluebird Toys in 1989, prior to Mattel striking a distribution deal with and buying the company in the 1990s. It gave rise to a pair of animated shorts in the 2000s, along with the feature-length animated TV movie PollyWorld in 2006. Following the original toyline's return in 2018, an animated Polly Pocket series was produced for the Family Channel, with its second season premiering on Netflix in Fall 2020.

“I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension,” said Dunham.

“As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen," added Collins.

Polly Pocket represents the latest project announced by Mattel and MGM, which are further developing movies based on the View-Master toy and American Girl Doll property. Mattel Films is also collaborating with Warner Bros. on a live-action Barbie movie that has Margot Robbie attached to star, with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing the script. On top of that, Mattel and Universal Pictures are turning the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots tabletop game into a live-action film about a father and son who bond over an advanced robotic war machine, with Vin Diesel starring and producing.

Dunham is best known for creating and starring in HBO's Girls, a dramedy series that follows four twenty-something women as they come of age in New York City. Her other credits include Tiny Furniture, the acclaimed quasi-biographical 2010 comedy/drama film Dunham directed and starred in opposite Girls actors Alex Karpovsky and Jemima Kirke.

Written and directed by Lena Dunham, Polly Pocket stars Lily Collins. It has yet to receive a release date.
