"Arrow" has cast its Ra's al Ghul: Australian actor Matt Nable, joining the cast for an unspecified amount of episodes in a recurring role will first be seen as al Ghul in the fourth episode of the show's forthcoming third season -- the 50th "Arrow" installment overall -- titled "The Magician."

Along with the announcement, The CW provided a character description of the TV version of the long-time DC Comics villain: "Proud and unforgiving, Ra's is a ruthless strategist, a master of martial arts, and a shaper of history. He carries the wisdom of the ages, and protects some of its greatest secrets."

Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins has played a major part in "Arrow" thus far, but the character has yet to be seen. Last season, the show introduced his daughter Nyssa al Ghul, played by Katrina Law.

Best known as a Batman villain, Ra's al Ghul was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams, and first introduced in 1971's "Batman" #232. The character was played by Liam Neeson in 2005 film "Batman Begins," the start of director Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy.

Nable, who played Boss Johns in the 2013 film "Riddick," is also a former professional rugby player. He's starred in multiple Australian TV series, including "Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms" and "Underbelly: Badness."

"Arrow" season three premieres on The CW at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8.
