Joining Neo and Trinity are the new Morpheus, played by Candyman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Little is known about how this version of the character will connect to Laurence Fishburne's from the first three films -- who died in the canon video game The Matrix Online -- but the actor has opened up about taking over the role in the upcoming film.

"This is definitely a different iteration of the character," Abdul-Mateen II said last month about his version of Morpheus. "I play a character who's definitely aware of the history of the Matrix [and] the history of Morpheus. This character is on a journey of self-discovery. There's a lot in our story that's about growth, defining your own path. Morpheus isn't exempt from that."

Behind Trinity is Jessica Henwick's Bugs, a new addition to the franchise. Another new addition stands behind Morpheus, likely played by Eréndira Ibarra, whose role has not yet been disclosed.

The fourth Matrix film will see the return of both Neo and Trinity following their deaths in Revolutions, but it's unclear how exactly they've been reborn. As for whether this will be the actual end of the franchise, that's up to writer and director Lana Wachowski. “Anytime Lana wants to make a movie, we’re all in," Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff recently said of the Matrix's future.

In a world of two realities—everyday life and what lies behind it—Thomas Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the Matrix, which is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before.

The Matrix Resurrections arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Dec. 22.
