Morpheus' beloved ship, the Nebuchadnezzar, is tragically blown to smithereens by a sentinel-bomb in The Matrix Reloaded, but its destruction only serves to highlight just how important the ship is during the course of the Matrix trilogy. It loses several members over time but all of them are, in their own ways, critical to the eventual outcome of the story.

Although some of the Nebuchadnezzar's crew disappear very early into the narrative, their personalities have left a lasting impression, whether positive or negative, on the fandom. More importantly, factors like character likability don't require extended onscreen times to estimate.

9 Cypher Is Cunning, Obnoxious, And Downright Trashy

The value of Cypher's presence in the Matrix universe revolves around serving as both a backstabber and a trigger for the other characters to evolve. He chooses the red pill willingly but quickly grows disenchanted with the bleakness of living in the real world.

Cypher chooses to betray the people who trust him with their lives, killing one and selling Morpheus to the agents in exchange for a peaceful existence in the artificially warm embrace of the matrix. He was cunning, obnoxious, and downright trashy.

8 Apoc & Switch Display A Modicum Of Playful Banter At The Dinner Table

The Matrix — Apoc and Switch

Apoc and Switch are unfortunately excised from the narrative early in the saga, with both of them tragically dying in the first movie. This prevented audiences from enjoying more of their character interactions. That said, both of their roles verge on the insignificant, so their disappearance doesn't really impact the emotional quota of the plot.

Apoc and Switch display a flair for playful banter at the dinner table on the Nebuchadnezzar but stay out of the limelight for most of the movie's runtime.

7 Dozer's Paternal Warmth And Alcohol-Brewing Skills Are Appreciated By The Crew

The Matrix — Dozer

Dozer plays a minimal role aboard the Nebuchadnezzar, but his fatherly vibes never fail to calm the frayed nerves of those around him. His courage is particularly noted in his final moments, given that he furiously tries to attack his younger brother's would-be killer, only to be murdered on the spot.

That being said, the ship's crew probably appreciates the fact that Dozer brews "alcohol" for them, a substance so potent that Cypher claims it can be used for "degreasing engines and killing brain cells."

6 Morpheus' Gruff Exterior Masks The Heart Of An Affectionate Teddy Bear

Morpheus doing Kung Fu in the Matrix

Morpheus is, by nature, a sullen character, having spent years hunting for the One without ever coming close to being successful. In fact, he retains his dourness even after Neo is discovered, presumably in order to keep his hopes from flurrying out of control.

Morpheus breaks into a smile on the rarest of occasions, but that doesn't mean he isn't affectionate - he is a gruff teddy bear who places the safety of his crew (and that of everyone at Zion) above everything else, including his own suffering.

5 Trinity Is Soft-Spoken, Strong-Willed, And A Fiery Force Of Nature

Trinity Caring For Neo In The Matrix

Trinity is often treated as Neo's paramour and little else, a limitation imposed on her character by the Oracle's prediction that she would fall in love with the One.

And yet, Trinity subverts her romantic side by being a fiery force of nature, capable of protecting not only herself but the man who is a literal superhero inside the matrix. Trinity is soft-spoken, strong-willed, and her faith in Neo is inextricably tied with her desire to achieve freedom for the human race.

The Matrix — Link shocked

Link comes in to substitute for Tank as the Nebuchadnezzar's operator after the latter died offscreen sometime between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded. He might not be as lighthearted as his brother-in-law Tank, but Link's passion proves to be quite infectious, particularly in life-or-death situations.

Link is also known for his very dry wit and comical observations, like referring to Neo "doing his Superman thing." He also has an adorable relationship with his niece and nephew, acting as something of a role model for Tank's children.

3 Tank's Joie De Vivre Doesn't Affect His Duties As The Ship's Operator

The Matrix — Tank smiling

Tank is the Nebuchadnezzar's chipper operator, in charge of the ship's computational administration and basically anything to do with programming management. His bubbly personality is delightful to watch - his bright grin tended to dispel the doom and gloom atmosphere that weighs the crew down.

Tank's joie de vivre may come off as slightly childish, but nobody on the Nebuchadnezzar ever complains about his lack of responsibility, which is what really matters. Sadly, Tank died sometime between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded.

2 Neo Accepts That Losing Trinity Is Worth Saving The World

Neo prepares for battle with Smith in Matrix Revolutions

Neo's destiny as the Prime Program makes him the fulcrum of the overarching storyline—the reason behind his nigh omnipotence is left ambiguous, probably because the Machines lack selection bias. Glories and Hail Marys aside, Neo is, at heart, a gentle soul with enough love to share with the entire world.

Although Neo rejects the Architect's path and decides to save Trinity's life, he eventually reverses this decision by taking a trip to Machine City. Neo knows that neither he nor his beloved will return from their journey, but he does it anyway.

1 Mouse's Zest For Life Cannot Be Quenched By Anything

The Matrix — Mouse with guns

The youngest member of the Nebuchadnezzar, Mouse is incredibly exuberant at any given time, so much so that the rest of the crew occasionally tells him to "shut up" when he begins rambling on about topics he's interested in. Very little can quench Mouse's zest for life, making him the diametric opposite of the unbearably whiny Cypher.

While Mouse's death is beyond sad, the fact remains that the young hero goes out on his own terms - unleashing a torrent of bullets from his iconic pair of automatic shotguns.
