The newly released trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth film in the series, includes a mysterious throwback to a scene from 1999's original movie, The Matrix.

In the middle of a fast-moving montage of scenes near the end of the trailer, a holographic recording of Neo's face during the first time he enters the Matrix appears to be projected against a dark, borderless backdrop. In the foreground, armed combatants exchange gunfire and a large control panel is visible.

The close-up on Neo's screaming face, shown in the screenshot below, occurs roughly two minutes into the Resurrections trailer. The additional elements surrounding it suggest that the scene is incorporated into the setting, rather than the new film simply reusing the footage for a flashback.

Few details about the plot of The Matrix Resurrections have been revealed so far. The first three films in the series starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, a computer hacker who learns through an encounter with Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus that the world he thought was real was actually a computer simulation created by sentient machines to use humans as an unwitting power source.

Although the third movie, The Matrix Revolutions, showed a definitive end to Neo's journey and killed off most of the main characters, Reeves is returning to reprise the lead role and so are several others from the original trilogy. Carrie-Anne Moss will be back as Neo's love Trinity, and Jada Pinkett Smith will again play Niobe. However, Fishburne will not reprise his role as Morpheus, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking up the part instead. Other newcomers to the franchise include Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Christina Ricci and Jonathan Groff.

In the trailer, Reeves' character appears to have amnesia or has otherwise been disconnected from his identity as Neo. The world and the people around him have likewise changed from those introduced in the previous movies, which may have something to do with his initiation into the Matrix being projected into the open like a movie. Once again, it appears that Neo will have to search for answers about who he is.

The Matrix Resurrections, directed by Lana Wachowski, arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Dec. 22.
