The Matrix may be coming back to the big screen for a fourth installment and sooner than initially believed if a new online rumor proves accurate.
The rumor suggests that Warner Bros. is indeed intent on reviving the cyberpunk sci-fi action franchise with Lana and Lilly Wachowski expected to return to direct after helming the original trilogy. Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk) has been tapped to write the screenplay and Michael B. Jordan is attached to star in the film as well as produce it through his production company Outlier Society Productions.
Perhaps more interestingly, the film is expected to begin principal photography as early as the first half of 2020 in Chicago, with the crew quietly being assembled for pre-production including returning art director Hugh Bateup who will serve as a production designer for the new film. It is unclear if the rumored film is a sequel, spinoff, or complete reboot of the franchise.
Previously, director Chad Stahelski had hinted that the Wachowskis, whom he worked with on The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were involved in a fourth Matrix film. A statement was later issued clarifying Stahelski's earlier comments as hypothetical rather than confirming a new Matrix film was being planned.
