Kevin Smith confirmed that his upcoming animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, is aimed at the adults who grew up with He-Man — but will also be family-friendly.

"And I certainly don't mean they're all talking about sex," Smith told Gizmodo. "Not at all. There's no sex in the show whatsoever."

The director added that "it's definitely a family-oriented show," noting, "The idea going in was we have to be able to show the characters both audiences can enjoy." He continued, "The audience that grew up watching it, who are now like in their forties or fifties, and their kids — who, presumably, they're going to watch this show with."

Smith further compared his vision for the Netflix revival series to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how those films have been able to capture fans of all ages.

"...When I go to the Marvel movie and I take my kid, I'm enjoying it and I’m enjoying sharing it with my kid because I was like, 'This is the shit I grew up on,'" Smith explained. "Now you're growing up on it, too ... That's what we baked into the DNA of Masters of the Universe: Revelation."

The original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series ran for two seasons and featured John Erwin as the voice of the titular hero and Alan Oppenheimer as the voice of both Skeletor and Man-At-Arms. A 1987 live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe was directed by Gary Goddard and starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

Smith previously revealed that Revelation will serve "as the next episode in the legacy '80s animated series that aired from 1983-1985." He said at the time, "This is a continuation of that story. We're playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into some of the unresolved storylines."

Developed by Kevin Smith, produced by Mattel Television with animation by Powerhouse Animation, Masters of the Universe: Revelation stars Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Lena Headey as Evil-Lyn, Chris Wood as Prince Adam/He-Man, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, Liam Cunningham as Man-At-Arms, Stephen Root as Cringer, Diedrich Bader as King Randor/Trap Jaw, Griffin Newman as Orko, Tiffany Smith as Andra, Henry Rollins as Tri-Klops, Alan Oppenheimer (original Skeletor) as Moss Man, Susan Eisenberg as Sorceress, Alicia Silverstone as Queen Marlena, Justin Long as Roboto, Jason Mewes as Stinkor, Phil LaMarr as He-Ro, Tony Todd as Scare Glow, Cree Summer as Priestess, Kevin Michael Richardson as Beast Man and Kevin Conroy as Mer-Man.
