Kaiju No. 8 takes place in a world where Japan is routinely attacked by giant monsters and tells the story of Kafka Hibino, a middle-aged loser who once dreamed of joining the kaiju-fighting Japanese Defense Force with his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro. While Mina goes on to become a renowned soldier and JDF commander, Kafka flunks the organization's entrance exam, and instead resorts to making a living by being part of the clean-up crew that disposes of the giant monsters' dead bodies after each battle. After one such fight, Kafka accidentally ingests a small kaiju, which gives him the ability to transform into one of the powerful monsters himself. Now hunted by the Defense Force and his best friend, Kafka becomes the eponymous "Kaiju No. 8," and must learn how to master his new abilities so he can become the hero he's always wanted to be.

The series was created by Naoya Matsumoto in 2020 and has become one of the biggest hits to emerge from Shuiesha's Shonen Jump+ service, which is the online, digital manga spinoff of the publisher's popular Weekly Shonen Jump print magazine. The digital manga has received over 70 million views, while the collected print editions of the series have sold over 4 million copies worldwide. The series, along with Tatsuya Endo's spy-themed domestic comedy Spy X Family, have been credited with helping to establish Shonen Jump+, and its English counterpart Manga Plus, as one of the world's premier digital manga platforms. It was previously announced that the second part of Tatsuki Fujimoto's incredibly popular and critically acclaimed Chainsaw Man will move over from the print edition of Shonen Jump and will make its debut on Shonen Jump+.

Kaiju No. 8 is published in English under the title Monster No. 8 and is available digitally on the Manga Plus website, and also in print from VIZ Media.
