Mass Effect: Andromeda introduced a balanced team for Pathfinder Ryder to explore a new galaxy with, and among those teammates was former human law enforcement agent Liam Kosta. Born on Earth, Kosta is an easygoing, laidback and adventurous security specialist who spent a good chunk of his life traveling the Milky Way with his parents. It only seemed natural he would one day go beyond his home galaxy to explore what life had to offer.

Optimistic and enthusiastic, Liam Kosta is a pretty straightforward guy who isn't afraid to tell it as he sees it. His desire to help pave the way for the Andromeda Initiative's Milky Way travelers to start a new life, coupled with his efforts to foster trust and good relations with the Andromeda galaxy's only known native species, the Angara, pushed him to often act without thinking, which generally required Ryder to come to his aid and bail him out.

Kosta and Ryder met shortly after their awakening upon the Hyperion's tumultuous arrival in the Heleus Closter. Regardless of the player's gender choice, Kosta was one of the first people they saw while undergoing their medical check. Later, when Ryder accompanied their father, Pathfinder Alec Ryder, and his team to Habitat 7, Kosta traveled with them before the player's shuttle suffered a malfunction and crashed to the surface. Separated from the other team, Kosta and Ryder explored the strange and savage new world they were on together before finally reuniting with the other half of the team.

After Alec Ryder's death and the transfer of Pathfinder status to the player character, Kosta and Ryder had the opportunity to work closely together as their explorations led them to their first meeting with the Angara people. Ryder could take the opportunity to get to know him a little better, finding him in his newly claimed Deck 3 storage area room on the Tempest. Sitting on the raggedy couch Kosta brought with him to Andromeda, the pair shared drinks and conversation about leaving university studies in engineering to instead train in law enforcement. He was a police officer for a time, but eventually, his disillusionment with the work prompted him to pursue other avenues.

He was working with Heavy Urban Search and Crisis Response when Alec Ryder recruited him to the Andromeda Initiative. His time with  Heavy Urban Search - Terrain 1, nicknamed HUSTL, led him to a post-hostility relief action where Alec handpicked him for the Andromeda Initiative's human Pathfinder team.

During that initial bonding period on Kosta's couch, Ryder learned that after listening to Alec talk about Andromeda's mission of exploration, Liam was more than a little intrigued. The notion of a new beginning was also appealing. Despite having the ideal life back in the Milky Way, it quickly became apparent that an adventurous soul like Liam Kosta would have had little to no choice when it came to an opportunity to go places no one else had ever gone before.

On the sofa, a female Ryder could flirt with him, offering an opportunity for a one night stand, but he made it clear at the time he wasn't interested in much more than that. As their mission in Andromeda progressed, and Ryder became involved in helping complete Kosta's personal mission to rescue his Angaran contacts after they went missing.

Kosta's personal loyalty mission was an absolute disaster, demonstrating the folly of rushing in without thinking more carefully through things. It prompted him to admit that maybe it was best if he left those kinds of things to the professionals, though the greater part of him still wanted to do his part. However, carrying it out offered the option for female Ryder to lock into a steady romantic relationship with him afterward that led to promises of a future in which Liam wanted to settle down together and possibly get married.

Despite his laidback personality, Kosta was a beast when it came to combat. He used his jump jets to get up close and personal with a set of overclocked, double omni blades for powerful havoc strikes that set his teammates up for combo actions that wiped out foes quickly.

Kosta's reception as a companion was relatively warm overall, with a heavy focus on the adorability of the brotherly bond he developed with Angaran squadmate, Jaal Ama Darav. Other fans of the franchise thought he was a little too laidback, like a surfer boy leisurely awaiting his next big wave. Skipping through career paths before finally settling in Heavy Urban Search and Crisis Response and then leaping across the stars to explore a whole new galaxy offered the impression, at times, that it might not be long before he got bored in Andromeda, too. Then what? Another six hundred year cryosleep on his way to a new galaxy in need of discovering and rescuing?

On the other hand, maybe the endless exploration and surprises Andromeda offered would turn out to be enough for Liam Kosta, providing him with a lifetime of options and excitement to keep him on his toes. Fans hope for a future in the Mass Effect franchise that truly does bring the original trilogy and Andromeda together. If that happens, perhaps the universe will have the opportunity to find out whatever happened to Kosta.
