With Shonen Jump's popularity and rigorous editorial process, it is not uncommon for the magazine's manga titles to receive anime adaptations. In fact, it is almost certain once the manga reaches a certain level of popularity and duration. Given that a typical anime season lasts for around 12-13 episodes, a manga should have at least 30+ chapters, since most anime cover two or three chapters per episode. After releasing more than 100 chapters, one of Shonen Jump's hidden comedy gems has finally received an anime adaptation.

Shueisha, the company behind Weekly Shonen Jump, confirmed a Mashle: Magic and Muscles anime production through the magazine. The anime is set to air sometime in 2023, though further details are yet to be announced. Mashle was first serialized at the start of 2020 and is still publishing weekly updates with occasional breaks. The manga already has 115 chapters and 12 volumes. Here's a preview of what anime-only fans can expect from this magical parody series.

The Plot of Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Mashle is set in a world where magic is both a common phenomenon and a measure of social status. Those who wield powerful magic stand on top, while those who don't are regarded as trash. The series' main character, Mash, possesses zero levels of magic and can't even perform the most basic of spells, which is the primary reason he is abandoned by his family. Regro Burnedead took the abandoned Mash and taught him self-defense. He lived with the young man in seclusion, afraid of how harshly society would treat the magicless Mash.

Years of training and working out grant Mash the perfect physique, though his years of seclusion have also limited his understanding of common sense. Their peaceful life ends after Mash encounters corrupt officials who threaten to hunt the adoptive father and son duo. The only way Mash can save them is to enroll at a magic academy, rise through its ranks and become a Divine Visionary. Since he can't use any magic, he must use his muscles to achieve magical feats instead.

Mashle Changes the Standard Magical Formula With Comedy

A powerless main character succeeding in a world where magic thrives is not particularly original. Black Clover, Doron Dororon and My Hero Academia share this narrative. Originality, however, is not Mashle's priority; in fact, the manga doesn't even bother with it.

The series parodies renowned franchises and portrays them comically. Mash Burnedead's character design looks like a mix between Saitama and Mob Psycho 100's Mob, while his abilities resemble that of One-Punch Man's bald protagonist. Easton Magic Academy is also a blatant clone of Harry Potter's Hogwarts, though Easton has a wackier student body.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles satirizes the notion of a world of magic, mashing numerous tropes together and turning them into a comical masterpiece topped by references from renowned franchises. Readers who enjoy absurd comedy will love Mashle's tone and narrative, and it is undeniably one of the upcoming anime to keep an eye on in 2023.
