When "Mary Poppins Returns," she'll be played by "Into the Woods" star Emily Blunt. Now, Disney has released a photo of Blunt, decked head-to-toe in Poppins' signature style.
The photo shows Blunt in a blue, striped jacket with a hat to match. In her left hand, she carries a carpet bag, which fans will recognize from the first film. Like most of Poppins' memorabilia, her bag has a magical little twist; it's a bottomless bag, and -- as seen in the first film -- she can fit an entire room's worth of furniture inside.
Set in Depression-era London, the film follows the adult lives of Michael (Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Mortimer), the children from “Mary Poppins.” According to Deadline, “After Michael suffers a personal loss, the nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.” Meryl Streep will play Mary’s eccentric cousin Topsy.
Directed and produced by Rob Marshall (“Chicago”), “Mary Poppins Returns” stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Dick Van Dyke, who starred in the original.
Now filming at Shepperton Studios in England, “Mary Poppins Returns” will open Christmas 2018.
