A new rumor suggests that the second season of Marvel's What If...? will arrive sooner than anticipated.
As reported by Murphy's Multiverse [link has since been deleted], a recent Disney+ newsletter released in the Netherlands suggests that the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe animated series will return on July 20. The image in question features a shot of the Guardians of the Multiverse pictured underneath the supposed premiere date of Season 2. At the time of writing, neither Disney nor Marvel Studios have addressed the newsletters and there has been no known marketing hyping up the continuation of What If...?.
Given that there's been a minimal promotion for the popular MCU series, fans should take this news with a hefty grain of salt. It's unlike Marvel Studios to shadow release one of their major productions and given that the supposed release date is less than a month away at the time of writing, this could be nothing more than an error.
Details on What If...? Season 2 remain scarce but given the general structure and premise of the first installment, which was released in 2021, audiences can likely expect another superhero anthology series. Writer A.C. Bradley confirmed in early 2022 that the latest batch of episodes isn't too far away, promising that fans would be treated to further adventures across the multiverse before the year is out.
Despite its vastly different presentation to other significant MCU productions, What If...? earned largely positive reviews from fans and critics alike. While viewers appreciated the quirky reinterpretations of some of Marvel's most iconic big-screen heroes, some felt that the stories themselves underdelivered in terms of writing and voice acting.
It's currently unknown which characters will feature in What If...? Season 2 but director Bryan Andrews teased fans that the ever-popular Wall-Crawler may feature in future adventures. "We do love Spider-Man, so who knows what may happen in the future," Andrews said. "We'll definitely be able to -- hopefully, at that point -- either revisit characters or revisit characters in a way that we are familiar with and then spin them even something else differently.
Marvel's What If...? Season 2 is rumored to release on July 20 but official confirmation has yet to be provided. More updates on the series will likely be shared in the coming months.
