A few days ago, CBR reported that Ubisoft had registered a website domain under the name “Marvel’s The Avengers: Battle For Earth,” indicating that a deal had been reached with the comic book publisher to create a game based on the hit film. Today, the Associated Press has confirmed that the Avengers are, in fact, assembling for an upcoming game — though not the version currently dominating the big screen.
“Marvel’s The Avengers: Battle For Earth” is being prepared for a fall release, possibly to capitalize on the film’s home video release. At the moment, the game is only in the works for two specific platforms — Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii U console and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which will work specifically with its motion-sensitive Kinect device.
The game, in development at Ubisoft Quebec, will utilize motion-based controls allowing players to take on the role of a variety of the Avengers, including Iron Man and Captain America, to take on enemies. But rather than being based on the movie, the game instead takes its cues from the comic books — specifically the “Secret Invasion” saga, where Earth’s Mightiest Heroes do battle with Skrulls posing as superheroes.
“The idea that we’re making a motion-control version of ‘The Avengers’ is a unique proposition if you compare that to superhero games of the past,” Ubisoft marketing VP Tony Key stated in the article. “This is the perfect type of game for that because these characters are very action oriented. They’re always fighting and throwing things.”
We’re likely to get a better look at “Battle For Earth” next month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which Ubisoft is attending.
“Marvel’s The Avengers: Battle For Earth” is slated for release this fall.
