Marvel Studios' fast-approaching Disney+ original series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will show a "lighter side" of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil, series creator and lead writer Jessica Gao has revealed.

Gao discussed the Man Without Fear's involvement in She-Hulk during a recent interview with The Direct. "Well, first of all, we were shocked that we were able to use him," she said. "Like, when we first heard that he was on the table, I mean, we couldn't believe it. We kept thinking like, 'Okay, at some point, someone's gonna say 'Just kidding.'' Like, 'It's a cruel joke, and you actually can't have him.' And it just kept going and kept going."

Gao continued, "And Charlie is so wonderful. He's so game to do whatever, and he's such a wonderful actor, and a wonderful human being. What was so fun about bringing him and Daredevil into our world is that people have already seen a Daredevil who is very dramatic, little bit on the heavy side, very dark, brooding."

When asked about Daredevil's characterization in She-Hulk, Gao explained that "it was so fun to be able to do -- and we do this with every character cameo from the MCU -- is we take them from the environment that you know them from, which is a much more dramatic and action-oriented role, much more on the serious side, and we bring them into our world and they get to play in the tone of She-Hulk. And they got to explore and we get to see a lighter side of that character." The Direct further postulates that Daredevil's characterization in She-Hulk is likely more indicative of the show itself, rather than Marvel's overall depiction of the character moving forward. In other words, Daredevil will likely return to his brooding ways in subsequent projects.

For All His Angst, Daredevil Has Comedy Chops

While the character of Matt Murdock/Daredevil has long been defined by his angst and inner darkness, he has certainly been shown to have a sense of humor over the years as well. One example from the comics is the lengths Matt would go to in order to protect his secret identity, whether it was creating a fake twin brother named Mike or wearing a holiday sweater that says "I'm not Daredevil." Charlie Cox's live-action version of Matt even got to show off his more humorous side back in the Netflix days from time to time, typically through banter with his best friend and legal partner Foggy Nelson.

Still, Marvel's Daredevil -- in which Cox starred as the eponymous character for three seasons on Netflix -- is mostly known for its dark tone, mature themes and graphic violence, rather than its comedy. Still, if the comics have proven anything, it's that Matt Murdock is more than capable of seamlessly transitioning between these two worlds.

The MCU's Daredevil Has a Loaded Schedule

Daredevil originally ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2018, with Cox also starring as Daredevil in the crossover limited series Marvel's The Defenders, which dropped in 2017. After Netflix canceled its entire slate of Marvel dramas, the character entered a state of limbo before Cox finally reprised his role as Matt Murdock in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Daredevil, as well as Marvel's other Netflix originals, then migrated to Disney+ in early 2022.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, a trailer for She-Hulk revealed that Cox would appear as Daredevil in the Disney+ series, his first time actually suiting up since 2018. In the half-hour legal comedy, the Man Without Fear sports a yellow and red suit, a throwback to the swashbuckling days of Stan Lee and Bill Everett's earliest Daredevil comics. Cox is also reportedly slated to appear in Marvel Studios' Disney+ series Echo, due for release in 2023. Cox will then star in his own Marvel Studios reboot series, Daredevil: Born Again, which itself is scheduled to premiere in 2024.
