WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Wastelanders: Hawkeye #1, available now from Marvel.

Of all the devastating landscapes across the Multiverse, the wastelands of the world of Old Man Logan are by far the worst. Maybe not all that surprisingly, some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes have still managed to survive, though not without going through tragic transformations of their own. Of course, not everything is so easy to change, and Hawkeye has just discovered that one classic Marvel romance is still going strong in spite of the superhero apocalypse.

After the world's villains rallied together to eradicate the heroes, the few who survived the onslaught have eked out existences in the wastes in whatever way they could. In the case of Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, work as a bodyguard was only good until his eyes failed him. Now blind, Hawkeye has sought out someone who could teach him how to carry on without his vision. As seen in the pages of Wastelanders: Hawkeye #1 by Ethan Sacks, Ibraim Roberson, Dijjo Lima, and VC's Cory Petit, that figure just so happens to be none other than Matt Murdock. After he traded his life as Daredevil to take up the silent work of his own former master Stick, Matthew would find Hawkeye at his most desperate. While Clint had been able to take revenge on those who had murdered his friends, he still couldn't find peace. Luckily, the former Daredevil had just the mission to reignite Clint's passion while also giving him the most important lesson of all.

After fighting his way through hordes of Hand ninja, Hawkeye would come face-to-face with Elektra Natchios to deliver a package he had been told would "pierce the heart." Rather than any weapon, however, the package merely contained a small bunch of flowers. As it turns out, even taking over the Hand hasn't kept Elektra from continuing her decades old romance with Matt Murdock. Instead, it has simply changed the nature of their relationship. As it stands the two couldn't be in the same place at the same time without being forced to battle to the death, presumably because of Elektra's position within the Hand itself. Of course, honor bound blood feuds aren't anything especially new to this particular power couple, nor is it strictly the worst thing they have dealt with.

Elektra's first appearance back in 1980's Daredevil #168 made it clear from the very start that she and Matt Murdock were something akin to star crossed lovers. The relationship they had formed in their earlier years was immediately replaced by their opposing places as a superhero and assassin, although that was only a bump in the road compared to what awaited them. Both have given in to their darker impulses over the years, just as both have been there to rescue one another when they need it most. Between death, resurrection, and everything in between, there was never really anything that could have kept these two apart for long, not even a post apocalyptic wasteland ruled by supervillains.

Clint Barton may not have appreciated the lesson that the former Daredevil tried to impart upon him, but at the very least the point got across loud and clear. Still, seeing such a diametrically opposed couple go to such great lengths to keep their relationship alive in spite of so many impossible odds speaks to the indomitable nature of the heroes of the Marvel Universe beyond their physical strengths. Even if he doesn't want to admit it, the fact that Matt and Elektra have kept it together is the biggest proof that there is hope for this world yet.
